In this talk an overview will be pro\u00advid\u00aded of efforts span\u00adning exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal stud\u00adies of NOx stor\u00adage and reduc\u00adtion and selec\u00adtive cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reduc\u00adtion, mod\u00adel\u00ading of mono\u00adlith reac\u00adtors, and dynamome\u00adter test\u00ading of fuels and aftertreat\u00adment tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies.<\/p>\n<p>The effec\u00adtive\u00adness and spa\u00adtio-tem\u00adpo\u00adral fea\u00adtures of the \u201clean NOx trap\u201d (LNT) will be described based on our com\u00adbined exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and mod\u00adel\u00ading stud\u00adies. Our recent work focused on the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of NH3 has sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance in NSR\/SCR appli\u00adca\u00adtions. Exper\u00adi\u00adments in both bench-scale and Tem\u00adpo\u00adral Analy\u00adsis of Prod\u00aducts (TAP) reac\u00adtors reveal a com\u00adplex cou\u00adpling between the stor\u00adage chem\u00adistry and trans\u00adport process\u00ades. Mea\u00adsure\u00adments of the con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtion fronts show that a major route to N2 for\u00adma\u00adtion is via NH3. Sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic vari\u00ada\u00adtion of the Pt dis\u00adper\u00adsion results in a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant vari\u00ada\u00adtion in stor\u00adage and reduc\u00adtion activ\u00adi\u00adty as well as the prod\u00aduct dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion. Iso\u00adtopic TAP exper\u00adi\u00adments reveal the exis\u00adtence of gra\u00addi\u00adents in the stored NOx in the vicin\u00adi\u00adty of the Pt crys\u00adtal\u00adlites. The trans\u00adport of the stored NOx can lim\u00adit the regen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion rate under some con\u00addi\u00adtions. Glob\u00adal kinet\u00adic and micro\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic mod\u00adels are devel\u00adoped that pre\u00addict most of the obser\u00adva\u00adtions and direct ongo\u00ading design and opti\u00admiza\u00adtion efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Stud\u00adies of selec\u00adtive cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reduc\u00adtion of NOx with NH3 on Fe- and Cu-based zeo\u00adlite coat\u00aded mono\u00adliths will be also be high\u00adlight\u00aded described. Steady-state kinet\u00adics exper\u00adi\u00adments reveal sev\u00ader\u00adal com\u00adpet\u00ading reac\u00adtions. The NOx con\u00adver\u00adsion is shown to be a non\u00adlin\u00adear func\u00adtion of the NO: NO2 feed ratio and is under\u00admined by the com\u00adpet\u00ading reac\u00adtions of NH3 and NO oxi\u00adda\u00adtion. Trans\u00adport lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions become prob\u00adlem\u00adat\u00adic when NO2 is present.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Mike Harold is the M.D. Ander\u00adson Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Hous\u00adton. He received his B.S. in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from Penn State in 1980 and his PhD in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Hous\u00adton in 1985. Mike joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty of the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Depart\u00adment at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Mass\u00ada\u00adchu\u00adsetts at Amherst, where he became Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor in 1991. In 1993 Mike joined DuPont Com\u00adpa\u00adny where he held sev\u00ader\u00adal research and super\u00advi\u00adso\u00adry posi\u00adtions. In 1999 Mike was appoint\u00aded Research Man\u00adag\u00ader of the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Process Fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtals Group in the Cen\u00adtral Research Depart\u00adment of the DuPont Com\u00adpa\u00adny. Mike returned to acad\u00ade\u00admia as the Dow Chair of the UH Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, which lat\u00ader became the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading.
