This method allows us to tune the rel\u00ada\u00adtive ratio of dif\u00adfer\u00adent func\u00adtion\u00adal groups and the result\u00ading par\u00adti\u00adcle mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy of <acronym title=\"Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle\">MSNs<\/acronym>. By intro\u00adduc\u00ading two organoalkoxysi\u00adlanes as pre\u00adcur\u00adsors in the co-con\u00adden\u00adsa\u00adtion reac\u00adtion, we can uti\u00adlize one pre\u00adcur\u00adsor with stronger struc\u00adture-direct\u00ading abil\u00adi\u00adty to cre\u00adate the desired pore and par\u00adti\u00adcle mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy and employ the oth\u00ader for selec\u00adtive immo\u00adbi\u00adliza\u00adtion of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. As a proof of prin\u00adci\u00adple, we have syn\u00adthe\u00adsized and report\u00aded a series of bifunc\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized <acronym title=\"Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle\">MSN<\/acronym>-based het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for a vari\u00adety of car\u00adbonyl acti\u00adva\u00adtion reac\u00adtions, such as aldol, Hen\u00adry and cyanosi\u00adly\u00adla\u00adtion reac\u00adtions. By vary\u00ading the sec\u00adondary group in the bifunc\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized <acronym title=\"Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle\">MSN<\/acronym> cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, we dis\u00adcov\u00adered that the selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of a nitroal\u00addol reac\u00adtion of two com\u00adpet\u00ading ben\u00adzalde\u00adhy\u00addes react\u00ading with nitromethane could be sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly tuned sim\u00adply by vary\u00ading the physic\u00ado\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal prop\u00ader\u00adties of the pore sur\u00adface-bound sec\u00adondary groups, i.e. polar\u00adi\u00adty and hydropho\u00adbic\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p>Fur\u00adther\u00admore, we have report\u00aded a bio\u00admimet\u00adic coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sys\u00adtem com\u00adprised of a series of bifunc\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized <acronym title=\"Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle\">MSN<\/acronym> mate\u00adri\u00adals with var\u00adi\u00adous rel\u00ada\u00adtive con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtions of a gen\u00ader\u00adal acid and a base group. We were inspired by the fact that enzymes engaged in car\u00adbonyl chem\u00adistry often employ both gen\u00ader\u00adal acid and base cat\u00adalyt\u00adic residues in the active sites to coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly acti\u00advate spe\u00adcif\u00adic sub\u00adstrates. In this sys\u00adtem, we have demon\u00adstrat\u00aded that the gen\u00ader\u00adal acid func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty could coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly acti\u00advate sub\u00adstrates with the basic group in cat\u00adalyz\u00ading var\u00adi\u00adous reac\u00adtions that involve car\u00adbonyl acti\u00adva\u00adtion. By fur\u00adther uti\u00adliz\u00ading this approach, we have devel\u00adoped a mixed oxide cat\u00ada\u00adlyst that con\u00adtains both Lewis acidic and basic sites for the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of biodiesel from var\u00adi\u00adous free fat\u00adty acid (<acronym title=\"Free Fatty Acid\">FFA<\/acronym>)-con\u00adtain\u00ading oil feed\u00adstocks. We have demon\u00adstrat\u00aded that the acid and base func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties could coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly cat\u00adalyze both the ester\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of <acronym title=\"Free Fatty Acid\">FFAs<\/acronym> and the trans\u00ades\u00adter\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of oils with short-chain alco\u00adhols (e.g. methanol and ethanol) to form alkyl esters (biodiesel).
