This paper presents the devel\u00adop\u00adment of effec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for aque\u00adous phase pro\u00adcess\u00ading. The focus of the work will be of hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion and hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis and will include exam\u00adples of upgrad\u00ading of sug\u00adar alco\u00adhols (sor\u00adbitol and glyc\u00aderol) and fer\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion prod\u00aducts such as amino acids and diacids into chem\u00adi\u00adcal prod\u00aducts.<\/p>\n<p>Choice of sup\u00adport has a tremen\u00addous impact on catal\u00ady\u00adsis per\u00adfor\u00admance and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. We have shown gran\u00adu\u00adlar and extrud\u00aded car\u00adbon sup\u00adports to be par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly sta\u00adble to hydrother\u00admal con\u00addi\u00adtions as mea\u00adsured by crush strength ver\u00adsus sil\u00adi\u00adca or alu\u00admi\u00adna sup\u00adports (see Fig\u00adure 1). Rutile Tita\u00adni\u00adum has also shown high strength. Gran\u00adu\u00adlar car\u00adbons have a very dif\u00adfer\u00adent pore struc\u00adture than car\u00adbon extru\u00addates which can impact cat\u00ada\u00adlyst per\u00adfor\u00admance.<\/p>\n<p>In the exam\u00adple of upgrad\u00ading of sug\u00adar alco\u00adhols the sup\u00adport plays a role on selec\u00adtive adsorp\u00adtion of reagents and prod\u00aducts. In addi\u00adtion to the sup\u00adport, the inter\u00adac\u00adtions between nick\u00adel and rhe\u00adni\u00adum play a piv\u00adotal role in the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst. An extreme exam\u00adple of the reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty dif\u00adfer\u00adence is shown in Fig\u00adure 2 (batch con\u00addi\u00adtions, 200&nbsp;\u00b0C, 1200 psig H<sub>2<\/sub>). In addi\u00adtion to nick\u00adel and rhe\u00adni\u00adum we will also dis\u00adcuss results with sil\u00adver, cop\u00adper, and ruthe\u00adni\u00adum.
