The demand for \u03b5-capro\u00adlac\u00adtam was 4 mil\u00adlion met\u00adric tons in 2005. Hydrox\u00ady\u00adlamine (hyam) is a key raw mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal for the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adture of \u03b5-capro\u00adlac\u00adtam. The hydrox\u00ady\u00adlamine used in the HPO\u2122 is pro\u00adduced by selec\u00adtive hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of nitric acid over a Pd\/C cat\u00ada\u00adlyst. Degus\u00adsa has done exten\u00adsive work to devel\u00adop Pd\/C cat\u00ada\u00adlysts with supe\u00adri\u00ador activ\u00adi\u00adty for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of hyam (Equa\u00adtion 1).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equa\u00adtion 1<\/strong>: NO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>\u2212<\/sup> + 3H<sub>2<\/sub> + 2H<sup>+<\/sup> \u2192<!-- <span>Pd\/C<\/span>  --> NH<sub>3<\/sub>OH<sup>+<\/sup> + 2H<sub>2<\/sub>O<\/p>\n<p>Many para\u00adme\u00adters influ\u00adence the per\u00adfor\u00admance of a cat\u00ada\u00adlyst. Our aim was to see how vary\u00ading the car\u00adbon sup\u00adport, Pd load\u00ading and Pt addi\u00adtion would affect the activ\u00adi\u00adty, selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and fil\u00adter\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst in hopes of iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading the opti\u00admal cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for the hyam reac\u00adtion (activ\u00adi\u00adty greater than 25&nbsp;g hyam\/g Pd, selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty &gt;; 90% and fast fil\u00adtra\u00adtion rate).<\/p>\n<p>Numer\u00adous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts were pre\u00adpared by sev\u00ader\u00adal dif\u00adfer\u00adent meth\u00adods and test\u00aded for their hyam activ\u00adi\u00adty. Cat\u00ada\u00adlysts (six in total; A-F) pre\u00adpared using the method that pro\u00advid\u00aded the most active cat\u00ada\u00adlysts were used in this study. These cat\u00ada\u00adlysts were each pre\u00adpared by the same pro\u00adpri\u00adetary pro\u00adce\u00addure and each con\u00adtains 10% Pd except D which con\u00adtains 9% Pd. In a typ\u00adi\u00adcal test 750&nbsp;mg of cat\u00ada\u00adlyst was added to a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous stirred tank reac\u00adtor (1500 rpm) con\u00adtain\u00ading the nitrate ions in 1L of phos\u00adphate buffer solu\u00adtion. The amount of hyam formed and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty after 90&nbsp;min at 30&nbsp;\u00b0C were mea\u00adsured by titra\u00adtion. Cat\u00ada\u00adlyst fil\u00adtra\u00adtion rates were mea\u00adsured by pass\u00ading a slur\u00adry of buffer solu\u00adtion con\u00adtain\u00ading 5&nbsp;g cat\u00ada\u00adlyst through a fil\u00adter cloth at 0.1&nbsp;MPa N<sub>2<\/sub> pres\u00adsure.<\/p>\n<p>From this study it is evi\u00addent that sev\u00ader\u00adal high\u00adly active hyam cat\u00ada\u00adlysts have been devel\u00adoped for the HPO\u2122 process. Depend\u00ading on which per\u00adfor\u00admance indi\u00adca\u00adtor is most impor\u00adtant (activ\u00adi\u00adty, selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty or fil\u00adter\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty) one can select the best Degus\u00adsa cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for their appli\u00adca\u00adtion.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Table 1:<\/strong> Activ\u00adi\u00adty (g hyam\/g Pd) and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty for bimetal\u00adlic cat\u00ada\u00adlysts and cat\u00ada\u00adlysts of vary\u00ading Pd load\u00adings.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<th>Cat.
