Since then, emis\u00adsions leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion has tight\u00adened sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly around the world,driving the devel\u00adop\u00adment and imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of com\u00adplex sys\u00adtems to con\u00adtrol emis\u00adsions ofPar\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlate Mat\u00adter (PM) and nitro\u00adgen oxides (NOx), as well as CO and HC. This\u00adp\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion pro\u00advides an overview of the sys\u00adtems cur\u00adrent\u00adly being used to meet today\u220dsDiesel leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion, and looks ahead to the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sys\u00adtems that will be used to meet\u00adfu\u00adture, incom\u00ading reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<p>An overview will be giv\u00aden of the require\u00adments and capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties of the cur\u00adrent\u00adDOC plus Diesel Par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlate Fil\u00adter (DPF) sys\u00adtems being used to con\u00adtrol CO, HC and PMe\u00admis\u00adsions with very high effi\u00adcien\u00adcy. The chal\u00adlenges that these sys\u00adtems face, and the\u00adways in which these chal\u00adlenges have been over\u00adcome will be out\u00adlined. The futuredi\u00adrec\u00adtion of this tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy will be dis\u00adcussed.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the main chal\u00adlenges cur\u00adrent\u00adly fac\u00ading the catalyst\/engine com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adtyre\u00adlate to the con\u00adtrol of NOx emis\u00adsions from Diesel engines. Reduc\u00ading NOx (to nitrogen)under the high\u00adly oxi\u00addiz\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions preva\u00adlent in the Diesel exhaust is extreme\u00adly\u00adchal\u00adleng\u00ading, but two approach\u00ades have already been suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly intro\u00adduced into largescale series pro\u00adduc\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>NOx Adsor\u00adber Cat\u00ada\u00adlysts (NAC) oper\u00adate by stor\u00ading NOx under oxi\u00addiz\u00ading\u00adcon\u00addi\u00adtions, and then reduc\u00ading this NOx dur\u00ading the peri\u00adod\u00adic, short-term reduc\u00ading eventscre\u00adat\u00aded by run\u00adning the engine under fuel-rich con\u00addi\u00adtions. An overview of the oper\u00adat\u00ading\u00adprin\u00adci\u00adples, capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and future chal\u00adlenges in the NAC area will be giv\u00aden.<\/p>\n<p>Selec\u00adtive Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Reduc\u00adtion (SCR) sys\u00adtems oper\u00adate by using ammo\u00adnia to react\u00ads\u00ade\u00adlec\u00adtive\u00adly with the NOx under oxi\u00addiz\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions. SCR sys\u00adtems are already in use onheavy duty Diesel vehi\u00adcles in Europe, and are start\u00ading to be intro\u00adduced into the NorthAmer\u00adi\u00adcan mar\u00adket. The per\u00adfor\u00admance capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and future chal\u00adlenges fac\u00ading SCR\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlyst tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy will be dis\u00adcussed. Some alter\u00adna\u00adtive NOx con\u00adtrol approach\u00ades are alsobe\u00ading con\u00adsid\u00adered, and a brief overview of the most promis\u00ading will be giv\u00aden.<\/p>\n<p>The increas\u00ading\u00adly strin\u00adgent leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion requires simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous very high con\u00adver\u00adsion\u00adsof all four reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded pol\u00adlu\u00adtants. This can be achieved by com\u00adbin\u00ading DPF and NOx\u00adcon\u00adtrol sys\u00adtems.
