Song, <em>Catal. Today<\/em>, <strong>115<\/strong> (2006)2\u201332]. Car\u00adbon cap\u00adture and seques\u00adtra\u00adtion (CCS) is con\u00adsid\u00adered as one of the key options for mit\u00adi\u00adgat\u00ading the emis\u00adsions of CO<sub>2<\/sub> from ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtems. Accord\u00ading to stud\u00adies by U.S. Depart\u00adment of Ener\u00adgy, CO<sub>2<\/sub> cap\u00adture by cur\u00adrent com\u00admer\u00adcial tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy using aque\u00adous solu\u00adtions of liq\u00aduid alka\u00adnolamines is ener\u00adgy inten\u00adsive and con\u00adtributes to as much as two thirds of the total cost for CO<sub>2<\/sub> seques\u00adtra\u00adtion. We have pro\u00adposed a new design con\u00adcept of \u201cmol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar bas\u00adket sor\u00adbent (MBS)\u201d as a nov\u00adel approach to CO<sub>2<\/sub> cap\u00adture and sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion using selec\u00adtive sol\u00adid sor\u00adbent [X. Xu et al., <em>Micro\u00adp\u00ador. Meso\u00adpor. Materi.<\/em>, <strong>62<\/strong> (2003) 29\u201345]. CO<sub>2<\/sub> \u201cmol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar bas\u00adket\u201d is nano-porous, CO<sub>2<\/sub>-selec\u00adtive high-capac\u00adi\u00adty sor\u00adbent for adsorp\u00adtion sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion of CO<sub>2<\/sub> from var\u00adi\u00adous gas mix\u00adtures.<\/p>\n<p>We have explored a num\u00adber of new MBS for\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtions. An exam\u00adple of the MBS-CO<sub>2<\/sub> is a nano-porous com\u00adpos\u00adite of poly\u00adeth\u00adyl\u00adeneimine and a meso\u00adporous moec\u00adu\u00adlar sieve MCM-41. PEI-MCM-41 type sor\u00adbents have been found to be effec\u00adtive for remov\u00ading CO<sub>2<\/sub> from flue gas and oth\u00ader gas streams with high capac\u00adi\u00adty and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty at 20\u2013100&nbsp;\u00b0C under atmos\u00adpher\u00adic pres\u00adsure. The CO<sub>2<\/sub> adsorp\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adty and CO<sub>2<\/sub> sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of MCM-41 were great\u00adly improved by load\u00ading PEI into its nano-sized pore chan\u00adnels (about 3 nm), which made the result\u00ading sor\u00adbent oper\u00adat\u00ading like a \u201cmol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar bas\u00adket\u201d for CO<sub>2<\/sub> (MBS-CO<sub>2<\/sub>). The influ\u00adence of mois\u00adture con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtions in the sim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded flue gas on the CO<sub>2<\/sub> adsorp\u00adtion sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion per\u00adfor\u00admance was also exam\u00adined. CO<sub>2<\/sub> adsorp\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adty of the MCM-41-PEI adsor\u00adbent for the sim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded moist flue gas was high\u00ader than that for the sim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded dry flue gas. The cap\u00adtured CO<sub>2<\/sub> can be eas\u00adi\u00adly and com\u00adplete\u00adly recov\u00adered by using a purge gas or a vac\u00adu\u00adum sys\u00adtem at 75\u2013100&nbsp;\u00b0C. The mul\u00adti-cycle exper\u00adi\u00adments have shown that the MBS-CO<sub>2<\/sub>sor\u00adbents have very good regen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty [C. S. Song et al., <em>Stud. Surf, Sci.Catal.<\/em>, <strong>153<\/strong> (2004) 411\u2013416]. With the MBS, CO<sub>2<\/sub> cap\u00adture from flue gas can be con\u00adduct\u00aded in a sol\u00advent-free and com\u00adpact sol\u00adid sor\u00adbent sys\u00adtem more ener\u00adgy effi\u00adcient\u00adly, eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly. The MBS-CO<sub>2<\/sub> con\u00adcept has also been found applic\u00ada\u00adble to cap\u00adture and sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen sul\u00adfide H<sub>2<\/sub>S in gas mix\u00adtures [X.Wang et al., <em>Green Chem\u00adistry<\/em>, <strong>9<\/strong> (2007) 695\u2013702]. Results of ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of MBS will also bedis\u00adcussed to shed light on why and how these nov\u00adel sor\u00adbents work under real\u00adis\u00adtic con\u00addi\u00adtions.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Dr. Chun\u00adshan Song is a Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Fuel Sci\u00adence and the Direc\u00adtor of the EMS Ener\u00adgy Insti\u00adtute at the Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty.
