They were designed to facil\u00adi\u00adtate the reduc\u00adtion of car\u00adbon\u00admonox\u00adide (CO) and unburned gaso\u00adline derived hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons (HC). The cat\u00ada\u00adlyst had tocon\u00adtin\u00adue to func\u00adtion with a approx\u00adi\u00admate reduc\u00adtion of 90% (rel\u00ada\u00adtive to an uncontrolled1970 vehi\u00adcle) for 50,000&nbsp;miles. The auto\u00admo\u00adbile indus\u00adtry was skep\u00adti\u00adcal since the suc\u00adces\u00adsof the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst was depen\u00addent on the dri\u00adving and main\u00adte\u00adnance cycles of the aver\u00adage\u00adcon\u00adsumer. Since that time we have seen one of the most suc\u00adcess\u00adful appli\u00adca\u00adtions ofcatal\u00ady\u00adsis for clean\u00ading emis\u00adsions from IC engines includ\u00ading gaso\u00adline, diesel, two and 4cycle engines, pow\u00ader plants, chem\u00adi\u00adcal plants, restau\u00adrants, and wide body air\u00adcraft to namea few. Today we see the three way cat\u00ada\u00adlyst (TWC) as the heart of a closed loop enginecon\u00adtrol strat\u00ade\u00adgy suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly reduc\u00ading emis\u00adsions of CO, HC and oxides of nitro\u00adgen (NOx)to near zero for 150,000&nbsp;miles. This has clear\u00adly been an achieve\u00adment of epic pro\u00adpor\u00adtion\u00adswith a pos\u00adi\u00adtive impact on the envi\u00adron\u00adment and the health of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Now cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sci\u00aden\u00adtists and engi\u00adneers are faced with new chal\u00adlenges for\u00adcon\u00adtrol\u00adling diesel engine emis\u00adsions for trucks, bus\u00ades and pas\u00adsen\u00adger cars. As we approach2010 Fed\u00ader\u00adal Stan\u00addard emis\u00adsions of CO, HC, NOx and par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlates must approach zerolevels. This is still not the end because we are now see\u00ading the emer\u00adgence ofen\u00advi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal emis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol with the need to uti\u00adlize more renew\u00adable sources oftrans\u00adporta\u00adtion fuels.
