In this pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion we report on three intrin\u00adsic modes of deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion that have been observed in stud\u00adies of exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal sup\u00adport\u00aded Co cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.  These include reversible sur\u00adface oxi\u00adda\u00adtion, irre\u00adversible mixed met\u00adal oxide for\u00adma\u00adtion, and cobalt par\u00adti\u00adcle growth.  Tech\u00adniques to mon\u00adi\u00adtor these changes are pre\u00adsent\u00aded as well as some hypothe\u00adses regard\u00ading the mech\u00ada\u00adnisms that are respon\u00adsi\u00adble for them.<br>\n<br>\n <strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Stu Soled received his Ph.D in chem\u00adistry focused pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly on x-ray crys\u00adtal\u00adlog\u00adra\u00adphy from Brown Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 1973. He then did 4&nbsp;year of post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal work in sol\u00adid state chem\u00adistry both at Brown Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and in France, focus\u00ading on the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of nov\u00adel oxide and sul\u00adfide mate\u00adri\u00adals. He has been at Exxon\u2019s Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Research Labs for more than 28&nbsp;years. His research inter\u00adests lie in the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion and eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of nov\u00adel cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals. He has worked exten\u00adsive\u00adly on Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch chem\u00adistry, sol\u00adid acid and met\u00adal catal\u00ady\u00adsis, and hydrotreat\u00ading. He is the coau\u00adthor of more than 70 pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions and 80 U.S. patents. He is cred\u00adit\u00aded with the dis\u00adcov\u00adery of the Neb\u00adu\u00adla cat\u00ada\u00adlyst and has worked on a joint Exxon\u00adMo\u00adbil-Albe\u00admar\u00adle team to bring it to com\u00admer\u00adcial real\u00adi\u00adty. Neb\u00adu\u00adla has been pro\u00adduc\u00ading low sul\u00adfur diesel fuels in over a dozen refin\u00adery units world\u00adwide.
