In 1994 he was appoint\u00aded his cur\u00adrent posi\u00adtion as Direc\u00adtor at the Fritz Haber Insti\u00adtute of the Max Planck Soci\u00adety in Berlin. His research activ\u00adi\u00adties range from inter\u00adfa\u00adcial reac\u00adtions of inor\u00adgan\u00adic solids, het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis, spec\u00adtroscopy of sur\u00adfaces dur\u00ading chem\u00adi\u00adcal reac\u00adtions, sol\u00adid state reac\u00adtions, acid-base chem\u00adistry on sur\u00adfaces, car\u00adbon chem\u00adistry, chem\u00adistry of oxide sys\u00adtems to clus\u00adter chem\u00adistry. Spe\u00adcif\u00adic focus is on the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion of het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts based upon inor\u00adgan\u00adic solids with the aim to bridge exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly the gap between sur\u00adface sci\u00adence and chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading in the field of oxi\u00adda\u00adtion catal\u00ady\u00adsis. He is author of about 500 pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions and reg\u00adis\u00adtered inven\u00adtor of more than 20 patent fam\u00adi\u00adlies. He is a Fel\u00adlow of the Roy\u00adal Soci\u00adety of Chem\u00adistry and mem\u00adber of numer\u00adous inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions.
