We are moti\u00advat\u00aded by a real\u00adiza\u00adtion that recent sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic advance\u00adments, main\u00adly in the area of mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar sci\u00adence, have poten\u00adtial to bring a rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion to the field of dis\u00adcov\u00adery in het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.<\/p>\n<p>I will present our recent work where we explored poten\u00adtial uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of high\u00adly uni\u00adform metal\u00adlic nano-struc\u00adtured mate\u00adri\u00adals as selec\u00adtive het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. The advan\u00adtage of these mate\u00adri\u00adals com\u00adpared to con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals is that their struc\u00adture can be con\u00adtrolled with almost atom\u00adic pre\u00adci\u00adsion, and that it is pos\u00adsi\u00adble to syn\u00adthe\u00adsize high\u00adly homo\u00adge\u00adneous struc\u00adtures. We demon\u00adstrat\u00aded some of these advan\u00adtages recent\u00adly when we showed that well-defined, tai\u00adlored Ag nano-struc\u00adtures are much more selec\u00adtive in het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous epox\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion of eth\u00adyl\u00adene to form eth\u00adyl\u00adene oxide (EO) (Eth\u00adyl\u00adene + \u00bdO<sub>2<\/sub> \u2192 EO) than con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal indus\u00adtri\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.<\/p>\n<p>We showed using quan\u00adtum chem\u00adi\u00adcal Den\u00adsi\u00adty Func\u00adtion\u00adal The\u00ado\u00adry (DFT) cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions, where we stud\u00adied crit\u00adi\u00adcal ele\u00admen\u00adtary chem\u00adi\u00adcal steps that gov\u00adern the selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to EO in the process, that the Ag(100) sur\u00adface should be inher\u00adent\u00adly more selec\u00adtive than the Ag(111) sur\u00adface. We note that cat\u00adalyt\u00adic par\u00adti\u00adcles, syn\u00adthe\u00adsized using con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal syn\u00adthe\u00adsis pro\u00adce\u00addure and cur\u00adrent\u00adly used in com\u00admer\u00adcial eth\u00adyl\u00adene epox\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion process, are dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded by the (111) sur\u00adface. To syn\u00adthe\u00adsize Ag nano-struc\u00adtures which are dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded with the Ag(100) faces, we employed a syn\u00adthe\u00adsis pro\u00adce\u00addure which uses organ\u00adic sta\u00adbi\u00adliz\u00ader mol\u00ade\u00adcules to direct the growth of the nano-struc\u00adture in a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar direc\u00adtion and to con\u00adtrol the sur\u00adface facets that ter\u00admi\u00adnate the nano-struc\u00adture. This syn\u00adthet\u00adics strat\u00ade\u00adgy allowed us to syn\u00adthe\u00adsize well-defined and high\u00adly uni\u00adform Ag nano-wires and nano-cubes which are dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded by the (100) facet. Sub\u00adse\u00adquent exper\u00adi\u00adments showed that Ag nano-wires and nano-cube cat\u00ada\u00adlysts can achieve selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to EO, which is, at dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adtial con\u00adver\u00adsion, by ~ 40&nbsp;% high\u00ader than for con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal Ag cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.<\/p>\n<p>We have also recent\u00adly start\u00aded explor\u00ading these metal\u00adlic nano-struc\u00adtures as pos\u00adsi\u00adble plat\u00adforms for chem\u00adi\u00adcal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion. The fea\u00adtures of these nano-struc\u00adtures that are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly appeal\u00ading are: (i) the nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtures are well defined on atom\u00adic lev\u00adel, and their sur\u00adface to vol\u00adume ratio is fair\u00adly high, which makes these struc\u00adtures inher\u00adent\u00adly bet\u00adter suit\u00aded for the stud\u00adies of sur\u00adface chem\u00adi\u00adcal process\u00ades com\u00adpared to tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal mod\u00adel sys\u00adtems, which are while very well defined, char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adized by low sur\u00adface to vol\u00adume ratio. (ii) we can syn\u00adthe\u00adsize the nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtures with high degree of uni\u00adfor\u00admi\u00adty in size and shape, which rules out pos\u00adsi\u00adble effects due to diver\u00adsi\u00adty in size and shape, i.e. these, (iii) the nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtures are effec\u00adtive scat\u00adter\u00aders of elec\u00adtro\u00admag\u00adnet\u00adic radi\u00ada\u00adtion which make them suit\u00adable as plat\u00adforms for a num\u00adber of chem\u00adi\u00adcal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion tech\u00adniques includ\u00ading sur\u00adface enhanced Raman (SERS) or IR spec\u00adtro\u00adscopies. We will demon\u00adstrate the util\u00adi\u00adty of the nano-struc\u00adtures for chem\u00adi\u00adcal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion by a way of an exam\u00adple, where we mon\u00adi\u00adtored in-situ eth\u00adyl\u00adene epox\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>We will also show that the well-defined metal\u00adlic nano-struc\u00adtures exhib\u00adit inter\u00adest\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adties when exposed to UV and vis\u00adi\u00adble light. We will show how these char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics can be used to design nov\u00adel pho\u00adto-elec\u00adtro-cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals and process\u00ades.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Suljo Linc came to the Unit\u00aded States from Bosnia under the aus\u00adpices of a Soros Foun\u00adda\u00adtion Fel\u00adlow\u00adship, here he received a BS degree in Physics from West Chester Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty (1998) , and a Ph.D. in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading under Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Mark Barteau (2003) where he inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded the the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal and exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal aspects of alkene par\u00adtial oxi\u00adda\u00adtion on sil\u00adver. He accept\u00aded a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal posi\u00adtion in Matthias Scheffler\u2019s The\u00ado\u00adry Group at the Fritz Haber Insti\u00adtute of the Max Planck Soci\u00adety in Berlin, and in 2004 took a posi\u00adtion in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Michi\u00adgan. Suljo has received a num\u00adber of awards, includ\u00ading NSF Career Award in 2006, and Young Sci\u00aden\u00adtist Prize from the Coun\u00adcil of the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adeties, Paris, France, July 2004.
