The recent avail\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of aber\u00adra\u00adtion cor\u00adrect\u00aded ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal elec\u00adtron micro\u00adscopes is rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adiz\u00ading our abil\u00adi\u00adty to char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adize the mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy, crys\u00adtal\u00adlog\u00adra\u00adphy and chem\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion of such nanoscop\u00adic vol\u00adumes of mate\u00adri\u00adals and for the first time are giv\u00ading us more real\u00adis\u00adtic views of these cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sys\u00adtems. To illus\u00adtrate the supe\u00adri\u00ador imag\u00ading per\u00adfor\u00admance of this new gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of elec\u00adtron micro\u00adscopes, we will present a high angle annu\u00adlar dark field (HAADF) imag\u00ading study of a sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adic set of gold on iron oxide CO oxi\u00adda\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, rang\u00ading from those with lit\u00adtle or no activ\u00adi\u00adty, to oth\u00aders with very high activ\u00adi\u00adties. Using this approach, com\u00adbined with XPS analy\u00adsis, we will unam\u00adbigu\u00adous\u00adly demon\u00adstrate that the high cat\u00adalyt\u00adic activ\u00adi\u00adty for CO oxi\u00adda\u00adtion derives from the pres\u00adence of bi-lay\u00ader clus\u00adters which are ~0.5 nm in diam\u00ade\u00adter. We will also demon\u00adstrate that core-shell struc\u00adtures in sub-5nm Au+Pd, Pd@Au and Au@Pd bimetal\u00adlic nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles can be direct\u00adly visu\u00adal\u00adized using the z-con\u00adtrast sen\u00adsi\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of the HAADF imag\u00ading tech\u00adnique. To illus\u00adtrate the chem\u00adi\u00adcal analy\u00adsis capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties of aber\u00adra\u00adtion cor\u00adrect\u00aded ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal micro\u00adscopes, we will describe the poten\u00adtial advan\u00adtages of com\u00adbin\u00ading X-ray Ener\u00adgy Dis\u00adper\u00adsive Spec\u00adtroscopy (XEDS) spec\u00adtrum imag\u00ading with mul\u00adti\u00advari\u00adate sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal analy\u00adsis (MSA) tech\u00adniques. Through sev\u00ader\u00adal case stud\u00adies of the Au-Pd bimetal\u00adlic cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sys\u00adtems, we will demon\u00adstrate that STEM-XEDS can pro\u00advide invalu\u00adable high spa\u00adtial res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal infor\u00adma\u00adtion on (i) alloy homo\u00adgene\u00adity and phase seg\u00adre\u00adga\u00adtion effects with\u00adin indi\u00advid\u00adual nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles, (ii) par\u00adti\u00adcle size \u2014 alloy com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion cor\u00adre\u00adla\u00adtions, and (iii) alloy com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion changes that can occur as these cat\u00ada\u00adlysts are used.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Chris Kiely obtained his BSc in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Physics (1983) and PhD in Microstruc\u00adtur\u00adal Physics (1986) from Bris\u00adtol Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. From 1986\u201389 he was a vis\u00adit\u00ading post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal research asso\u00adciate in the Mate\u00adri\u00adals Research Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Illi\u00adnois at Urbana-Cham\u00adpaign. He joined the Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Depart\u00adment at Liv\u00ader\u00adpool Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty as a Lec\u00adtur\u00ader in 1989, where he worked his way through the ranks until even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly being award\u00aded a Per\u00adson\u00adal Chair in Mate\u00adri\u00adals Chem\u00adistry in 1999. Kiely joined Lehigh Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty (Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia, USA) as Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in 2002. He is cur\u00adrent\u00adly the Direc\u00adtor of the Cen\u00adter of the Nanochar\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry at Lehigh Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, which hous\u00ades an array of twelve elec\u00adtron micro\u00adscopes, includ\u00ading two aber\u00adra\u00adtion cor\u00adrect\u00aded instru\u00adments. He also serves as the Direc\u00adtor of the Lehigh Microscopy Schools. His research exper\u00adtise lies in the appli\u00adca\u00adtion and devel\u00adop\u00adment of trans\u00admis\u00adsion elec\u00adtron microscopy tech\u00adniques for the study of nanoscale fea\u00adtures in mate\u00adri\u00adals.
