\nFranklin and Fara\u00adday, at dif\u00adfer\u00adent times, were each the best known and most admired men of sci\u00adence in the west\u00adern world: Franklin, dur\u00ading the last half of the eigh\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry, Fara\u00adday, who was born eigh\u00adteen months after Franklin\u2019s death, dur\u00ading the mid\u00addle half of the nine\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Each dis\u00adcov\u00adered a large vari\u00adety of new phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna, and each was asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with some of the most spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar exper\u00adi\u00adments ever per\u00adformed.<\/p>\n

Of Fara\u00adday, who great\u00adly admired and often quot\u00aded Franklin, Ein\u00adstein had said that he was respon\u00adsi\u00adble for the great\u00adest change in the intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal frame\u00adwork of physics since New\u00adton, and Ruther\u00adford called him one of the great\u00adest dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00aders of all time.<\/p>\n

The lec\u00adtur\u00ader will describe (in terms that will be intel\u00adli\u00adgi\u00adble to non\u2013experts) how these two auto\u00addi\u00addacts became such icon\u00adic fig\u00adures, and how much they have influ\u00adenced the mod\u00adern world.<\/p>\n

Sir John Meurig Thomas is Hon\u00adorary Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Sol\u00adid State Chem\u00adistry at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cam\u00adbridge and Emer\u00adi\u00adtus Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adistry at the Roy\u00adal Insti\u00adtu\u00adtion of Great Britain, Lon\u00addon. For\u00admer\u00adly, he was Mas\u00adter of Peter\u00adhouse Col\u00adlege (1993 \u2013 2002), the old\u00adest Col\u00adlege in the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cam\u00adbridge, Direc\u00adtor of the Roy\u00adal Insti\u00adtu\u00adtion (1986 \u2013 2001) and Head of the Depart\u00adment of Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Chem\u00adistry, Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cam\u00adbridge (1978 \u2013 1986). Ear\u00adli\u00ader, he taught and researched at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Wales (Ban\u00adgor and Aberys\u00adt\u00adwyth).<\/p>\n

For his work in catal\u00ady\u00adsis, mate\u00adri\u00adals and sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry he was award\u00aded the Willard Gibbs Gold Medal of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Soci\u00adety (ACS), the Guilio Nat\u00adta Gold Medal of the Ital\u00adian Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Soci\u00adety and was the first recip\u00adi\u00adent (1999) of the ACS Annu\u00adal Award for \u201ccre\u00adative research in homo\u00adge\u00adneous and het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis\u201d. Stan\u00adford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty award\u00aded him the 2003 Linus Paul\u00ading Gold Medal for his con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to the advance\u00adment of sci\u00adence. In 1991, he was knight\u00aded for \u201cser\u00advices to chem\u00adistry and the pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adiza\u00adtion of sci\u00adence\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
