To accom\u00adplish this, the inher\u00adent\u00adly high oxy\u00adgen con\u00adtent of bio\u00admass com\u00adpounds, such as that of lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic bio\u00admass, requires sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant reduc\u00adtion via hydrodeoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion strate\u00adgies. The unsat\u00adu\u00adrat\u00aded car\u00adboxylic acid ita\u00adcon\u00adic acid (IA) can be pro\u00adduced from bio\u00admass via fer\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion path\u00adways, for exam\u00adple. A path\u00adway of inter\u00adest is the con\u00adver\u00adsion of IA to iso\u00adprene, facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00ading the renew\u00adable pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of an indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adly rel\u00ade\u00advant diolefin. IA can be suc\u00adces\u00adsive\u00adly hydro\u00adgenat\u00aded to yield 3-methyl tetrahy\u00addro\u00adfu\u00adran (3-MTHF), in a one-pot cas\u00adcade reac\u00adtion, where a Pd-Re bimetal\u00adlic cat\u00ada\u00adlyst results in an 80% yield to 3-MTHF. The 3-MTHF can then be con\u00advert\u00aded to iso\u00adprene, and oth\u00ader pen\u00adta\u00addi\u00adenes, through an acid cat\u00adalyzed vapor-phase dehy\u00addra-decy\u00adcliza\u00adtion. Mul\u00adti\u00adple sol\u00adid acid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, includ\u00ading alu\u00admi\u00adnosil\u00adi\u00adcates, met\u00adal oxides and phos\u00adpho\u00adrous mod\u00adi\u00adfied zeo\u00adlites, were screened for the dehy\u00addra-decy\u00adcliza\u00adtion step. A new class of cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals, all sil\u00adi\u00adcon<br>\nphos\u00adpho\u00adrous con\u00adtain\u00ading zeo\u00adlites, were found to be the most selec\u00adtive (70% iso\u00adprene and 20% pen\u00adta\u00addi\u00adenes), where the major side reac\u00adtion involved is a retro-prins con\u00adden\u00adsa\u00adtion of 3-MTHF to butane and formalde\u00adhyde. Through kinet\u00adic stud\u00adies, an inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion into the effect of Br\u00f8n\u00adst\u00aded acid strength, pore size and oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions on the selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to iso\u00adprene are dis\u00adcussed.
