After elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal deal\u00adloy\u00ading, the open, bicon\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous, three-dimen\u00adsion\u00adal nanoporous nanopar\u00adti\u00adcle elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts exhib\u00adit dra\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly enhanced elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00adalyt\u00adic prop\u00ader\u00adties.<\/p>\n<p>In the devel\u00adop\u00adment of effi\u00adcient elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts for oxy\u00adgen reduc\u00adtion reac\u00adtion (ORR), dura\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty is too often ignored in the pur\u00adsuit of high\u00ader activ\u00adi\u00adties. For 3-dimen\u00adsion\u00adal, nanoporous mate\u00adri\u00adals, in addi\u00adtion to the stan\u00addard mech\u00ada\u00adnisms of elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlyst degra\u00adda\u00adtion includ\u00ading Pt dissolution\/Ostwald ripen\u00ading and coalescence\/aggregation, new modes of mor\u00adpho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal and com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal evo\u00adlu\u00adtion must be con\u00adsid\u00adered. Here we use a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of in-situ and ex-situ exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal tech\u00adniques to devel\u00adop insight into the struc\u00adtur\u00adal and com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal evo\u00adlu\u00adtion of nanoporous PtNi nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles (np-NiPt) formed through the deal\u00adloy\u00ading of Pt 20 Ni 80 pre\u00adcur\u00adsor nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles. We demon\u00adstrate that sur\u00adface-dif\u00adfu\u00adsion facil\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded coars\u00aden\u00ading, dri\u00adven by the ten\u00adden\u00adcy to reduce the over\u00adall sur\u00adface free ener\u00adgy of the sys\u00adtem, is the dom\u00adi\u00adnant mech\u00ada\u00adnism of elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal active sur\u00adface area (ECSA) loss, con\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly result\u00ading in a decrease in activ\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p>With a bet\u00adter under\u00adstand\u00ading of the inter\u00adplay between nanoporous struc\u00adture coars\u00aden\u00ading and tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal loss, we have devel\u00adoped strat\u00ade\u00adgy to mit\u00adi\u00adgate coars\u00aden\u00ading and improve oper\u00ada\u00adtional cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty by imped\u00ading step edge move\u00adment through the use of for\u00adeign adsor\u00adbates on the<br>\nsur\u00adface. We show that par\u00adtial mono\u00adlay\u00ader dec\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion of np-NiPt with Ir, pos\u00adsess\u00ading a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly low\u00ader rate of sur\u00adface dif\u00adfu\u00adsion than Pt, acts to pin step edges and results in sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant enhance\u00adment in cat\u00ada\u00adlyst dura\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty as mea\u00adsured by ECSA and ORR activ\u00adi\u00adty reten\u00adtion.
