In this talk, some of our recent work on design\u00ading effi\u00adcient (active, selec\u00adtive and sta\u00adble) cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sys\u00adtems for ener\u00adgy and chem\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adver\u00adsions will be dis\u00adcussed. First, I will talk about our work on design\u00ading lay\u00adered nick\u00ade\u00adlate oxide elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts for elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal oxy\u00adgen reduc\u00adtion and evo\u00adlu\u00adtion reac\u00adtions. These process\u00ades play an impor\u00adtant role in fuel cells, elec\u00adtrolyz\u00aders and Li-air bat\u00adter\u00adies. We have uti\u00adlized den\u00adsi\u00adty func\u00adtion\u00adal the\u00ado\u00adry (DFT) cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions to iden\u00adti\u00adfy the fac\u00adtors that gov\u00adern the activ\u00adi\u00adty of nick\u00ade\u00adlate oxides toward these process\u00ades. Using a reverse microemul\u00adsion approach we demon\u00adstrate an approach for syn\u00adthe\u00adsiz\u00ading nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtured nick\u00ade\u00adlate oxide elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts with con\u00adtrolled sur\u00adface struc\u00adture. These nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtures are thor\u00adough\u00adly char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adized using atom\u00adic-res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion high angle annu\u00adlar dark field (HAADF) imag\u00ading along with elec\u00adtron ener\u00adgy-loss spec\u00adtroscopy (EELS) per\u00adformed using an aber\u00adra\u00adtion cor\u00adrect\u00aded scan\u00adning trans\u00admis\u00adsion elec\u00adtron micro\u00adscope (STEM). Con\u00adtrolled kinet\u00adic iso\u00adtopic and elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal stud\u00adies are used to devel\u00adop structure\/performance rela\u00adtion\u00adships to iden\u00adti\u00adfy nick\u00ade\u00adlate oxides with opti\u00admal elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00adalyt\u00adic activ\u00adi\u00adty. Sec\u00adond\u00adly, I will dis\u00adcuss our efforts on design\u00ading effi\u00adcient cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sys\u00adtems for bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion process\u00ades. Devel\u00adop\u00adment of active and selec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion is crit\u00adi\u00adcal in real\u00adiz\u00ading a renew\u00adable plat\u00adform for fuels and chem\u00adi\u00adcals. I will high\u00adlight some of our recent work on uti\u00adliz\u00ading reducible met\u00adal oxide encap\u00adsu\u00adlat\u00aded noble met\u00adal cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals to pro\u00admote hydrodeoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion (HDO) of bio\u00admass-derived com\u00adpounds. We show enhance\u00adment in HDO activ\u00adi\u00adty and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty due to the encap\u00adsu\u00adla\u00adtion of the met\u00adal nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles by an oxide film pro\u00advid\u00ading high inter\u00adfa\u00adcial con\u00adtact between the met\u00adal and met\u00adal oxide sites, and restric\u00adtive acces\u00adsi\u00adble con\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions of aro\u00admat\u00adics on the met\u00adal sur\u00adface.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Eran\u00adda Nikol\u00adla is an assis\u00adtant pro\u00adfes\u00adsor in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence at Wayne State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty since Fall 2011. Her research inter\u00adests lie in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts and elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts for chem\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adver\u00adsion process\u00ades and elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal sys\u00adtems (i.e., fuel cells, elec\u00adtrolyz\u00aders) using a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal tech\u00adniques. Dr. Nikol\u00adla received her Ph.D. in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Michi\u00adgan in 2009 work\u00ading with Prof. Suljo Lin\u00adic and Prof. Johannes Schwank in the area of sol\u00adid-state elec\u00adtro\u00adcatal\u00ady\u00adsis. She con\u00adduct\u00aded a two-year post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal work at Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia Insti\u00adtute of Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy with Prof. Mark E. Davis pri\u00ador to join\u00ading Wayne State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. At Cal\u00adtech she devel\u00adoped exper\u00adtise in syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of meso\/microporous mate\u00adri\u00adals and func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized sur\u00adfaces.
