{"id":4716,"date":"2017-04-09T17:38:47","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T21:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/?p=4716"},"modified":"2017-04-09T17:41:19","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T21:41:19","slug":"solid-catalysts-design-from-fundamental-knowledge-to-catalytic-application","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/awe9a91v\/abstracts\/solid-catalysts-design-from-fundamental-knowledge-to-catalytic-application\/","title":{"rendered":"Solid Catalysts Design: From Fundamental Knowledge To Catalytic Application"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Meeting Program \u2014 April 2017<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3956\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3956\" src=\"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/awe9a91v\/uploads\/2017\/04\/corma_avelino_2017.png\" alt=\"Professor Avelino Corma\" width=\"140\"><\/a><br>\n<strong>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Aveli\u00adno Cor\u00adma<\/strong><br>\n<em>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor and founder of the Insti\u00adtu\u00adto de Tec\u00adnolog\u00eda Qu\u00edmi\u00adca (UPV-CSIC)<br>\nValen\u00adcia, Spain<br>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 The key point in catal\u00ady\u00adsis is to define and syn\u00adthe\u00adsize the spe\u00adcif\u00adic active site that will min\u00adi\u00admize the acti\u00adva\u00adtion ener\u00adgy of the reac\u00adtion, while form\u00ading selec\u00adtive\u00adly the desired prod\u00aduct.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of homo\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis, high\u00adly selec\u00adtive mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar cat\u00ada\u00adlysts can be designed and\/or opti\u00admized from the fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal knowl\u00adedge accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded on chem\u00adi\u00adcal reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, and the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties offered by mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar mod\u00adel\u00adling, in situ or operan\u00addo spec\u00adtroscopy, kinet\u00adics and advanced cat\u00ada\u00adlyst syn\u00adthe\u00adsis. Then, when the cat\u00adalyt\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly active cen\u00adters are defined, and their inter\u00adac\u00adtion with reac\u00adtants and prod\u00aducts can be ratio\u00adnal\u00adized, it could, in prin\u00adci\u00adple, be pos\u00adsi\u00adble to pre\u00addict and pre\u00adpare more active and selec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. In the case of sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts it becomes more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to define and specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly build the active sites due to sur\u00adface het\u00adero\u00adgeneities present in most of the solids. Indeed, one should con\u00adsid\u00ader that the pres\u00adence of non-con\u00adtrol\u00adlable sur\u00adface defects and the fact that sur\u00adface recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion may occur dur\u00ading the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reac\u00adtion, makes the iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion and syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of the active sites in sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts a big chal\u00adlenge.<\/p>\n<p>From the point of view of max\u00adi\u00admiz\u00ading active sites, and since catal\u00ady\u00adsis with solids is a sur\u00adface phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon, high sur\u00adface sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts are most of the times pre\u00adferred. In this case it is not a sim\u00adple task to iden\u00adti\u00adfy the assem\u00adbly of atoms, and there\u00adfore to estab\u00adlish the enthalpy and entropy effects at the inter\u00adface of the sol\u00adid-gas or sol\u00adid-liq\u00aduid, that will be respon\u00adsi\u00adble for the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic effect at the mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar lev\u00adel. More\u00adover, even when the above is achieved, to syn\u00adthe\u00adsize the solids with well defined, homo\u00adge\u00adneous sin\u00adgle or mul\u00adti\u00adple cat\u00adalyt\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly active sites it is a dif\u00adfi\u00adcult task. Notice that reac\u00adtion selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty will depend on the capac\u00adi\u00adty to pre\u00adpare the sol\u00adid avoid\u00ading the pres\u00adence of sites oth\u00ader than the desired ones.<\/p>\n<p>It was our objec\u00adtive, since the first moment, to design and syn\u00adthe\u00adsize sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in where we could build with\u00adin the struc\u00adture (almost like in a lego), on the bases of the knowl\u00adedge devel\u00adoped on reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms, adsorp\u00adtion inter\u00adac\u00adtions and mate\u00adri\u00adals syn\u00adthe\u00adsis pro\u00adce\u00addures, the poten\u00adtial cat\u00adalyt\u00adic active sites. We expect\u00aded that, if suc\u00adcess\u00adful, this could be one way to achieve sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts with well defined, uni\u00adform sin\u00adgle or mul\u00adti\u00adple active sites. It also appeared to us that work\u00ading in that way it should be pos\u00adsi\u00adble to build bridges between the homo\u00adge\u00adneous and het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis. We are aware that in the case of the sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts would not be pos\u00adsi\u00adble to achieve the fine tun\u00ading of elec\u00adtron\u00adic, geo\u00admet\u00adric and chi\u00adral effects obtained by means of the lig\u00adands and mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar struc\u00adture, with tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal com\u00adplex\u00ades, and organ\u00adic mol\u00ade\u00adcules in homo\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis. Nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless, we attempt\u00aded to use the sur\u00adface topol\u00ado\u00adgy, tex\u00adtur\u00adal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics and chem\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion of the sol\u00adid to mas\u00adter mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar dif\u00adfu\u00adsion and adsorp\u00adtion of reac\u00adtants, while select\u00ading one among the dif\u00adfer\u00adent pos\u00adsi\u00adble tran\u00adsi\u00adtion states.<\/p>\n<p>We will present what has been our evo\u00adlu\u00adtion on the design of three types of sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in where we fol\u00adlowed the method\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy describe above. They are:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li> High sur\u00adface area hybrid organ\u00adic-inor\u00adgan\u00adic cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in where we attempt to reg\u00adu\u00adlate the char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics of the active sites and the geo\u00admet\u00adri\u00adcal flex\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to max\u00adi\u00admize dis\u00adper\u00adsion forces.<\/li>\n<li> Ful\u00adly inor\u00adgan\u00adic high\u00adly ther\u00admi\u00adcal\u00adly sta\u00adble micro and meso\u00adporous mate\u00adri\u00adals with well defined sin\u00adgle sites, while con\u00adtrol\u00adling mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar dif\u00adfu\u00adsion and adsorp\u00adtion to achieve remark\u00adable selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty effects.<\/li>\n<li> Gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading and sta\u00adbi\u00adliz\u00ading from sin\u00adgle met\u00adal atoms to clus\u00adters with a few atoms to nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles, with reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adties so high that remind those of enz\u00adimes.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n<p>We will show that by fol\u00adlow\u00ading the method\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy: \u201cunder\u00adstand\u00ading for design\u00ading and syn\u00adthe\u00adsiz\u00ading\u201d, we could also achieve what it is always a desir\u00adable objec\u00adtive in catal\u00ady\u00adsis: \u201cDesign\u00ading for indus\u00adtri\u00adal appli\u00adca\u00adtion\u201d.\n<\/p><p><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Aveli\u00adno Cor\u00adma, Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor and founder of the Insti\u00adtu\u00adto de Tec\u00adnolog\u00eda Qu\u00edmi\u00adca (CSIC-UPV) in Valen\u00adcia (Spain), he has been car\u00adry\u00ading out research in het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis in acad\u00ade\u00admia and in col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with com\u00adpa\u00adnies for near\u00adly 35&nbsp;years. He has worked on fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal aspects of acid-base and redox catal\u00ady\u00adsis with the aim of under\u00adstand\u00ading the nature of the active sites, and reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms. With these bases has devel\u00adoped cat\u00ada\u00adlysts that are being used com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adly in sev\u00ader\u00adal indus\u00adtri\u00adal process\u00ades. He is an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnized expert in sol\u00adid acid and bifunc\u00adtion\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for oil refin\u00ading, petro\u00adchem\u00adistry and chem\u00adi\u00adcal process, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and appli\u00adca\u00adtion of zeo\u00adlite cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. He has pub\u00adlished more than 900 research papers, and inven\u00adtor on more than 130 patents. Cor\u00adma earned his BS in Chem\u00adistry at Valen\u00adcia Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, PhD at Madrid under direc\u00adtion of Prof. Anto\u00adnio Cortes, and spent two years post\u00addoc at Queen \u0301s Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. He has received the Dupont Award on \u201cMate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence\u201d, Cia\u00adpet\u00adta and Houdry Awards of the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the F. Gault Award of the Euro\u00adpean Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the M.
