\"DionThe Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club of Philadel\u00adphia is pleased to announce Prof. Dion Vla\u00adchos as the recip\u00adi\u00adent of the 2016 Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club of Philadel\u00adphia Award, in recog\u00adni\u00adtion of his long-stand\u00ading cre\u00adative tech\u00adni\u00adcal con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions, both the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal and exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal; advanc\u00ading the under\u00adstand\u00ading of the mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar basis of het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis of com\u00adplex sys\u00adtems; and his lead\u00ader\u00adship role at the Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Cen\u00adter for Ener\u00adgy Inno\u00adva\u00adtion and Cen\u00adter for Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Sci\u00adence and Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. <\/p>\n

Prof. Vla\u00adchos received his PhD form the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence Depart\u00adment, Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Min\u00adneso\u00adta, where he stud\u00adied the struc\u00adtures and dynam\u00adics of adsorbed phas\u00ades and crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces. He joined the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Depart\u00adment at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Mass\u00ada\u00adchu\u00adsetts in 1993 as an Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor and in 1998 became an Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor at the depart\u00adment. In 2000, Dion joined the Depart\u00adment of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware, where he cur\u00adrent\u00adly holds a posi\u00adtion as Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Inez Kel\u00adley Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading.<\/p>\n

Dion has pio\u00adneered the work on devel\u00adop\u00adment of mul\u00adti-scale mod\u00adel\u00ading and apply\u00ading this approach to tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly impor\u00adtant prob\u00adlems in ener\u00adgy, catal\u00ady\u00adsis, bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion, nan\u00adotech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and cel\u00adlu\u00adlar engi\u00adneer\u00ading. His research has been adopt\u00aded by chem\u00adi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry in com\u00adpa\u00adnies, such as Cono\u00adcoPhillips, Prax\u00adair, and Rohm and Haas, for chem\u00adi\u00adcal process\u00ades design and emis\u00adsions reduc\u00adtion. <\/p>\n

Dion\u2019s research of bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion, specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly cat\u00adalyt\u00adic trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of sug\u00adars into fuels and chem\u00adi\u00adcals, helped to advance the under\u00adstand\u00ading of sug\u00adar chem\u00adistry. His work on the elu\u00adci\u00adda\u00adtion of active species in HCl\/CrCl3<\/sub> involved in sug\u00adar trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions result\u00aded in a high impact pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion with a record num\u00adber of cita\u00adtions. His the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal study of Sn-Beta cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for glu\u00adcose iso\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion has found the active form of tin in the zeo\u00adlite and revealed the impor\u00adtance of neigh\u00adbor\u00ading silanol groups for the selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of the iso\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion reac\u00adtion. Dion\u2019s the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal work was lat\u00ader con\u00adfirmed exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly by Davis group in Cal\u00adtech.<\/p>\n

As the founder and direc\u00adtor of the Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Cen\u00adter for Ener\u00adgy Inno\u00adva\u00adtion (CCEI), Dion has shown an out\u00adstand\u00ading lead\u00ader\u00adship and obtained $29.5M in fund\u00ading over nine years. Through CCEI, he helped to nur\u00adture col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtions between research groups from lead\u00ading aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic insti\u00adtu\u00adtions. CCEI focus\u00ades on the devel\u00adop\u00adment of new catal\u00ady\u00adsis and process\u00ades for bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion to fuel and chem\u00adi\u00adcals. <\/p>\n

Dion has pub\u00adlished over 340 sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic papers, which col\u00adlec\u00adtive\u00adly have over 9400 cita\u00adtions. In the past few years, he has been pub\u00adlish\u00ading over 30 research papers per year, which makes Dion one of the most pro\u00adduc\u00adtive catal\u00ady\u00adsis researchers.<\/p>\n
