More\u00adover, sup\u00adport\u00aded met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts suf\u00adfer from poor sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, man\u00adi\u00adfest\u00aded in the form of sin\u00adter\u00ading (i.e., par\u00adti\u00adcle growth) dur\u00ading reac\u00adtion.  The prop\u00ader selec\u00adtion of the oxide sup\u00adport is of great impor\u00adtance to ensure high dis\u00adper\u00adsion, activ\u00adi\u00adty and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of the nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles.  The abil\u00adi\u00adty of these sup\u00adports to enhance the dis\u00adper\u00adsion of the active met\u00adal on their sur\u00adface and con\u00adtrol their mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy and sin\u00adter\u00ading kinet\u00adics is fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly relat\u00aded to the nature and strength of the metal\u2013metal oxide inter\u00adac\u00adtion at the time of adsorp\u00adtion.  In this work, we have uti\u00adlized isother\u00admal titra\u00adtion calorime\u00adtry (ITC), a tech\u00adnique capa\u00adble of quan\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading the ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic descrip\u00adtion (\u0394G, \u0394H, \u0394S, n (sto\u00adi\u00adchiom\u00ade\u00adtry)) of tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion with a sup\u00adport mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal in a sin\u00adgle exper\u00adi\u00adment.  After pro\u00advid\u00ading a brief intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to ITC and meth\u00adods of cat\u00ada\u00adlyst syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, we will dis\u00adcuss our results to quan\u00adti\u00adfy the elec\u00adtro\u00adsta\u00adt\u00adic inter\u00adac\u00adtions between sol\u00advat\u00aded tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal ions and charged ampho\u00adteric met\u00adal oxide sur\u00adface.  With\u00adin this inter\u00adac\u00adtion-type, we have stud\u00adied both refrac\u00adto\u00adry and reducible met\u00adal oxides.  With a reducible met\u00adal oxide, ceria, we demon\u00adstrate a poten\u00adtial\u00adly new mech\u00ada\u00adnism of adsorp\u00adtion, which may describe the suc\u00adcess\u00adful sta\u00adbi\u00adliza\u00adtion of noble met\u00adals enabling main\u00adte\u00adnance of small sized nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles com\u00adpared to oth\u00ader oxide sup\u00adports.  In addi\u00adtion to ITC, bulk uptake stud\u00adies have aid\u00aded in quan\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading the amount of met\u00adal pre\u00adcur\u00adsor adsorbed on the sup\u00adport sur\u00adface and equi\u00adlib\u00adri\u00adum isotherms describe the uptake behav\u00adior and may pro\u00advide insight for pre\u00addict\u00ading long term sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of the nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles.  In the sec\u00adond half of the talk, we dis\u00adcuss the adsorp\u00adtion of tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal oxide and hydrox\u00adide nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles in the gal\u00adleries of of Nb-based per\u00adovskites.  ITC was used to quan\u00adti\u00adta\u00adtive\u00adly rank the strength of adsorp\u00adtion between the met\u00adal nanopar\u00adti\u00adcle and their propen\u00adsi\u00adty to sin\u00adter, as assessed by in-situ, high-tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture trans\u00admis\u00adsion elec\u00adtron microscopy.  In both exam\u00adples, we will empha\u00adsize this ini\u00adtial inter\u00adac\u00adtion at the sol\u00adid-liq\u00aduid inter\u00adface is impor\u00adtant and con\u00adveys a his\u00adto\u00adry effect to the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst that is evi\u00addent dur\u00ading post-pro\u00adcess\u00ading (dry\u00ading, cal\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion and reduc\u00adtion).  The esti\u00admat\u00aded ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic para\u00adme\u00adters are expect\u00aded to quan\u00adti\u00adfy the type of bond\u00ading at the inter\u00adface, shed light on the bind\u00ading mech\u00ada\u00adnism and the growth and sin\u00adter\u00ading kinet\u00adics of sup\u00adport\u00aded cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Robert (Rob) M Rioux is the Friedrich G. Helf\u00adferich Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty.  Pri\u00ador to join\u00ading the Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 2008, he was a Nation\u00adal Insti\u00adtutes of Health Post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal Fel\u00adlow at Har\u00advard Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adistry and Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Biol\u00ado\u00adgy work\u00ading with Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor George White\u00adsides.  He received his Ph.D. in phys\u00adi\u00adcal chem\u00adistry from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, Berke\u00adley in 2006 work\u00ading for Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Gabor Somor\u00adjai.  He holds a B.S. and M.S. degree in chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading from Worces\u00adter Poly\u00adtech\u00adnic Insti\u00adtute and the Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, respec\u00adtive\u00adly.  Since join\u00ading the Penn.
