The short\u00adage of cer\u00adtain com\u00admod\u00adi\u00adty chem\u00adi\u00adcals, such as propy\u00adlene, dri\u00adves up their prices, which in turn rais\u00ades the cost of the down\u00adstream chem\u00adi\u00adcals, such as acrylic acid. In this regard, lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic bio\u00admass derived feed\u00adstocks, e.g., lac\u00adtic acid and its esters, can poten\u00adtial\u00adly bridge the gap. Cur\u00adrent\u00adly, the com\u00admer\u00adcial fer\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion process using bio\u00admass-derived sug\u00adars can achieve a lac\u00adtic acid (or its esters) yield of up to 90%. The absence of effi\u00adcient and selec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for lac\u00adtic acid dehy\u00addra\u00adtion is the main miss\u00ading link in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of renew\u00adable acrylic acid. The pri\u00adma\u00adry road\u00adblock for the ratio\u00adnal design of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for lac\u00adtic acid dehy\u00addra\u00adtion is the lack of the mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic under\u00adstand\u00ading of the nature of active sites and mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic steps lead\u00ading to the selec\u00adtive removal of the \u03b1-hydrox\u00adyl group by dehy\u00addra\u00adtion. Through kinet\u00adic and in-situ spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtions, we iden\u00adti\u00adfy the dehy\u00addra\u00adtion reac\u00adtion pro\u00adceeds through dis\u00adso\u00adcia\u00adtive adsorp\u00adtion, acid-medi\u00adat\u00aded dehy\u00addra\u00adtion, and asso\u00adcia\u00adtive des\u00adorp\u00adtion steps. These mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic insights will guide the design of selec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for this reac\u00adtion.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Bingjun Xu is cur\u00adrent\u00adly an Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware. Dr. Xu received his Ph.D. in Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Chem\u00adistry, advised by Prof. Friend, from Har\u00advard Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 2011. His the\u00adsis estab\u00adlished a mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic frame\u00adwork for oxida\u00adtive cou\u00adpling reac\u00adtions on Au sur\u00adface through sur\u00adface sci\u00adence stud\u00adies. Dr. Xu worked with Prof. Davis at Cal\u00adtech on the devel\u00adop\u00adment of a low tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture, man\u00adganese oxide based ther\u00admo\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal cycle for water split\u00adting. Upon fin\u00adish\u00ading his post\u00addoc, he joined Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in the fall of 2013.
