Exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal evi\u00addence has long point\u00aded to organochromium(III) active sites, and the prepa\u00adra\u00adtion of graft\u00aded (SiO)<sub>2<\/sub>CrCH(SiMe<sub>3<\/sub>)<sub>2<\/sub> sites by the reac\u00adtion of Cr[CH(SiMe<sub>3<\/sub>)<sub>2<\/sub>]<sub>3<\/sub> with par\u00adtial\u00adly dehy\u00addrox\u00ady\u00adlat\u00aded sil\u00adi\u00adca sup\u00adports this con\u00adclu\u00adsion. How\u00adev\u00ader, a plau\u00adsi\u00adble mech\u00ada\u00adnism for their for\u00adma\u00adtion from the inter\u00adac\u00adtion of chro\u00admate and eth\u00adyl\u00adene alone remains to be found. A key issue is the incom\u00admen\u00adsu\u00adrate nature of the required redox reac\u00adtions, since Cr(VI) must be reduced by an odd num\u00adber of elec\u00adtrons (three), while only closed-shell organ\u00adic oxi\u00adda\u00adtion prod\u00aducts are detect\u00aded. For the CO-reduced cat\u00ada\u00adlyst, Cr K-edge XANES, EPR and UV-vis spec\u00adtro\u00adscopies are con\u00adsis\u00adtent with ini\u00adtial step-wise reduc\u00adtion of Cr(VI) in two-elec\u00adtron steps, first to Cr(IV), and ulti\u00admate\u00adly to Cr(II). Accord\u00ading to Cr K-edge EXAFS and UV-vis spec\u00adtroscopy, the Cr(II) sites have a coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion num\u00adber high\u00ader than two, most like\u00adly through inter\u00adac\u00adtion with neigh\u00adbor\u00ading silox\u00adane oxy\u00adgens. After removal of adsorbed CO, the Cr(II) sites react with eth\u00adyl\u00adene in an over\u00adall one-elec\u00adtron redox reac\u00adtion to gen\u00ader\u00adate organochromium(III) sites and organ\u00adic rad\u00adi\u00adcals.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Scott received her B.Sc. in Chem\u00adistry from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Alber\u00adta (Cana\u00adda) in 1987, and her Ph.D. in Inor\u00adgan\u00adic Chem\u00adistry from Iowa State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 1991, where she worked with J. Espen\u00adson and A. Bakac on the acti\u00adva\u00adtion of O<sub>2<\/sub> and organ\u00adic oxi\u00adda\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms. She was a NATO Post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal Fel\u00adlow with Jean-Marie Bas\u00adset at the Insti\u00adtut de recherch\u00ades sur la catal\u00adyse (CNRS) in Lyon, France, before join\u00ading the fac\u00adul\u00adty of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Ottawa (Cana\u00adda) in 1994 as an Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adistry. She held an NSERC Women\u2019s Fac\u00adul\u00adty Award, a Cot\u00adtrell Schol\u00adar Award, a Union Car\u00adbide Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Award and was named a Cana\u00adda Research Chair in 2001. She moved to the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, San\u00adta Bar\u00adbara in 2003, where she is cur\u00adrent\u00adly holds the Dun\u00adcan and Suzanne Mel\u00adlichamp Chair in Sus\u00adtain\u00adable Catal\u00ady\u00adsis, with joint fac\u00adul\u00adty appoint\u00adments in both Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Chem\u00adistry <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Bio\u00adchem\u00adistry. She directs the NSF-spon\u00adsored Part\u00adner\u00adship for Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Research and Edu\u00adca\u00adtion in Elec\u00adtron Chem\u00adistry and Catal\u00ady\u00adsis at Inter\u00adfaces, a col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive research pro\u00adgram involv\u00ading UCSB and sev\u00ader\u00adal promi\u00adnent catal\u00ady\u00adsis research groups in Chi\u00adna. Her research inter\u00adests include sur\u00adface organometal\u00adlic chem\u00adistry, olefin poly\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion, nano\u00adma\u00adte\u00adri\u00adals, bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion, envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal catal\u00ady\u00adsis and the devel\u00adop\u00adment of new kinet\u00adic and spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic meth\u00adods to probe reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms at sur\u00adfaces.
