DuPont de Nemours <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Co<br>\nWilm\u00ading\u00adton, DE <\/em><br>\n<a href=\"sourav.sengupta@dupont.com\">sourav.\u200bsengupta@\u200bdupont.\u200bcom<\/a><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 In the past three decades, there has been a con\u00adcert\u00aded effort in the chem\u00adi\u00adcal, agro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal, phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal, nutraceu\u00adti\u00adcal, and petro\u00adle\u00adum indus\u00adtries to design cost-advan\u00adtaged, inher\u00adent\u00adly safer, sus\u00adtain\u00adable, and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly-friend\u00adly process\u00ades. Catal\u00ady\u00adsis plays a cru\u00adcial role in improv\u00ading process effi\u00adcien\u00adcies and process inten\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion lead\u00ading to increased atom uti\u00adliza\u00adtion, reduced by-prod\u00aduct for\u00adma\u00adtion, cheap\u00ader process, and low\u00ader cap\u00adi\u00adtal invest\u00adment. Also, there is an increas\u00ading inter\u00adest in using renew\u00adably-sourced feed\u00adstocks for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of fuels, chem\u00adi\u00adcals, and advanced mate\u00adri\u00adals due to fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in petro\u00adle\u00adum prices, lim\u00adit\u00aded avail\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of petro\u00adle\u00adum resources, and increas\u00ading con\u00adsumer con\u00adscious\u00adness about sus\u00adtain\u00adable process\u00ades.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nAlthough catal\u00ady\u00adsis is a major <em>tour-de-force<\/em> in dri\u00adving this effi\u00adca\u00adcious and green chem\u00adistry rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion, the role of reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading, reac\u00adtor design, process devel\u00adop\u00adment, and opti\u00admum oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions can\u00adnot be under\u00ades\u00adti\u00admat\u00aded. Some of the fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00adcepts of catal\u00ady\u00adsis will be dis\u00adcussed and linked to chem\u00adi\u00adcal process\u00ades of indus\u00adtri\u00adal rel\u00ade\u00advance. Specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the role of sci\u00adence and engi\u00adneer\u00ading in indus\u00adtri\u00adal catal\u00ady\u00adsis will be illus\u00adtrat\u00aded with par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar empha\u00adsis on cat\u00ada\u00adlyst eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, process opti\u00admiza\u00adtion, cat\u00ada\u00adlyst deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion, and reac\u00adtor design asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with indus\u00adtri\u00adal process\u00ades. Case stud\u00adies will include hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion reac\u00adtions using sup\u00adport\u00aded base met\u00adal and pre\u00adcious met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts and sol\u00adid acid cat\u00adalyzed reac\u00adtions, includ\u00ading the hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of hexa\u00adflu\u00ado\u00adroace\u00adtone and cat\u00admint oil, and dehy\u00addra\u00adtion of xylose.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Dr. Sourav K. Sen\u00adgup\u00adta is a Research Fel\u00adlow in the Mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Sci\u00adences Divi\u00adsion (Cen\u00adtral Research <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Devel\u00adop\u00adment Depart\u00adment) of E. I. DuPont de Nemours <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Co. He received his PhD degree in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in 1991. Imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly after com\u00adplet\u00ading his PhD, Dr. Sen\u00adgup\u00adta joined the DuPont Com\u00adpa\u00adny and was placed on loan to Cono\u00adco where he devel\u00adoped nov\u00adel path\u00adways for the oxida\u00adtive desul\u00adfu\u00adr\u00adiza\u00adtion of gaso\u00adline and qual\u00adi\u00adfied new hydrodesul\u00adfu\u00adr\u00adiza\u00adtion and FCC cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. Short\u00adly after\u00adwards, he was trans\u00adferred to the Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Cen\u00adter (CR<span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span>D). At CR<span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span>D, he worked on sol\u00adid acid, sol\u00adid base, and hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion catal\u00ady\u00adsis pro\u00adgrams and made impor\u00adtant con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to a num\u00adber of Strate\u00adgic Busi\u00adness Unit (SBUs).<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nDr. Sen\u00adgup\u00adta spent sev\u00ader\u00adal years at DuPont\u2019s Nylon busi\u00adness unit, where he worked on a num\u00adber of com\u00admer\u00adcial process\u00ades and research pro\u00adgrams, includ\u00ading low-pres\u00adsure and high-pres\u00adsure ADN hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion, hydro\u00adgen cyanide syn\u00adthe\u00adsis by Andrus\u00adsow and induc\u00adtion-heat\u00ading process\u00ades, and nitrous oxide destruc\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlyst tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nWhen DuPont sold their Nylon, poly\u00adester, and Lycra busi\u00adness\u00ades to Koch Indus\u00adtries, Dr. Sen\u00adgup\u00adta joined Invista, a whol\u00adly-owned sub\u00adsidiary of Koch Indus\u00adtries, where his work involved inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the tech\u00adni\u00adcal and eco\u00adnom\u00adic fea\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of capro\u00adlac\u00adtam com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adiza\u00adtion.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nAfter a short stint at Invista, Dr. Sen\u00adgup\u00adta came back to DuPont, and joined their Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Solu\u00adtions Enter\u00adprise (DCSE) as a man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading tech\u00adni\u00adcal chemist at Cham\u00adbers Works in New Jer\u00adsey. His respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty cov\u00adered 42 dif\u00adfer\u00adent spe\u00adcial\u00adty chem\u00adi\u00adcals. There he worked with a team of experts to design, devel\u00adop, and com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adize a nov\u00adel hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion process for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of hexa\u00adflu\u00ado\u00adroiso\u00adpropanol (HFIP) and hexa\u00adflu\u00ado\u00adroace\u00adtone (HFA) recov\u00adery process. He was also involved in the com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adiza\u00adtion of a num\u00adber of Cap\u00adstone prod\u00aducts. In 2009, he start\u00aded up a Process Devel\u00adop\u00adment Cen\u00adter for DCSE at the Exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal Sta\u00adtion. In 2011, he moved back to CR<span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span>D and has been work\u00ading on a num\u00adber of R<span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span>D pro\u00adgrams on using renew\u00adable feed\u00adstock to man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adture chem\u00adi\u00adcals and mate\u00adri\u00adals and new cat\u00ada\u00adlyst devel\u00adop\u00adment.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nDr. Sengupta\u2019s exper\u00adtise is in the area of catal\u00ady\u00adsis, reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading and reac\u00adtor analy\u00adsis, and process devel\u00adop\u00adment.
