The award is giv\u00aden for out\u00adstand\u00ading con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the advance\u00adment of catal\u00ady\u00adsis. Such advance\u00adment can be sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic, tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal or in orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion lead\u00ader\u00adship.<\/p>\n<p>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Vohs is a Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware grad\u00adu\u00adate.  After a NATO Post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow\u00adship at Fac\u00adultes Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adtaires Notre-Dame de la Paix in Namur, Bel\u00adgium he start\u00aded his aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic car\u00adri\u00ader at Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia where he is cur\u00adrent\u00adly the Carl V. S. Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading. His award nom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtors empha\u00adsize among oth\u00aders his pio\u00adneer\u00ading work in the appli\u00adca\u00adtion of sur\u00adface sci\u00adence tech\u00adniques to under\u00adstand reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms and site require\u00adments on met\u00adal oxide sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtals. He demon\u00adstrat\u00aded the use of High Res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion Elec\u00adtron Ener\u00adgy Loss Spec\u00adtroscopy (HREELS) to obtain vibra\u00adtional spec\u00adtra of reac\u00adtive inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adates on the sur\u00adfaces of semi\u00adcon\u00adduct\u00ading and insu\u00adlat\u00ading met\u00adal oxides. This work, which con\u00adtin\u00adues to be high\u00adly cit\u00aded today, was vital to mak\u00ading the con\u00adnec\u00adtion between mod\u00adel sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces and high sur\u00adface area pow\u00adder cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in demon\u00adstrat\u00ading mech\u00ada\u00adnisms and site require\u00adments from mod\u00adel sys\u00adtems that could be applied to com\u00adplex mate\u00adri\u00adals. His HREELS and XPS work on vana\u00addia, tita\u00adnia, and ceria-based mate\u00adri\u00adals helped to under\u00adstand the sur\u00adface prop\u00ader\u00adties of these mate\u00adri\u00adals and lead to applied research on oxy\u00adgen stor\u00adage process\u00ades which is of vital impor\u00adtance to sol\u00adid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). As one of the lead\u00aders of this field, pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Vohs con\u00adtributed to the fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal under\u00adstand\u00ading of relat\u00aded reac\u00adtion and trans\u00adport process\u00ades, as well as strate\u00adgies for pre\u00advent\u00ading deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion and cok\u00ading in these devices. More\u00adover, he is one of a small but grow\u00ading num\u00adber of researchers who are demon\u00adstrat\u00ading a new par\u00ada\u00addigm for design of new cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals from atom\u00adistic under\u00adstand\u00ading.<\/p>\n<p>In addi\u00adtion to his research con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions, Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Vohs has advised near\u00adly 20 grad\u00adu\u00adate stu\u00addents and about the same num\u00adber of post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlows dur\u00ading his 18&nbsp;years as fac\u00adul\u00adty at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia where he also served as Asso\u00adciate Dean and Depart\u00adment Chair.
