Facile sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion makes het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts an attrac\u00adtive option for achiev\u00ading high effi\u00adcien\u00adcy in these process\u00ades. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, lit\u00adtle is known about the sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry of bio\u00admass-derived oxy\u00adgenates in an aque\u00adous envi\u00adron\u00adment. How\u00adev\u00ader, this knowl\u00adedge will be need\u00aded to improve the activ\u00adi\u00adty, selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for aque\u00adous phase process\u00ades to the lev\u00adel we are used to in vapor phase reac\u00adtions. This pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion will focus on sur\u00adface inter\u00adac\u00adtions of bio\u00admass-derived oxy\u00adgenates with met\u00adal oxides (Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>, TiO<sub>2<\/sub>, ZrO<sub>2<\/sub>, CeO<sub>2<\/sub>, MgO, Nb<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub>) and sup\u00adport\u00aded met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts (Pt\/Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>).<\/p>\n<p>The sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry of aque\u00adous solu\u00adtions of poly\u00adols on polar met\u00adal oxides is strong\u00adly affect\u00aded by the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion between water and the poly\u00adols for adsorp\u00adtion sites. Direct\u00aded inter\u00adac\u00adtions with spe\u00adcif\u00adic sur\u00adface sites dom\u00adi\u00adnate. Even in the pres\u00adence of water, poly\u00adols with suf\u00adfi\u00adcient spa\u00adtial sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion between their alco\u00adhol groups (e.g. glyc\u00aderol) can chemisorb on Lewis acid sites form\u00ading sta\u00adble mul\u00adti\u00adden\u00adtate sur\u00adface species. The fre\u00adquen\u00adcies of C-O stretch\u00ading vibra\u00adtions of par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00ading groups scale lin\u00adear\u00adly with the elec\u00adtroneg\u00ada\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of the met\u00adal atom pro\u00advid\u00ading an indi\u00adca\u00adtion for reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty trends in acid cat\u00adalyzed reac\u00adtions, such as dehy\u00addra\u00adtion. The sur\u00adface species described here can also sta\u00adbi\u00adlize met\u00adal oxides like \u03b3-Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> against hydrol\u00ady\u00adsis in hot liq\u00aduid water that would oth\u00ader\u00adwise dete\u00adri\u00ado\u00adrate the mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal. Direct dehy\u00addra\u00adtion of adsorbed glyc\u00aderol on the Lewis acid sites of Nb<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub> yields hydrox\u00ady\u00adace\u00adtone as the main prod\u00aducts, where\u00adas acrolein is formed when Br\u00f8n\u00adst\u00aded acid sites are involved in the con\u00adver\u00adsion.<\/p>\n<p>In-situ spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic stud\u00adies pro\u00advide addi\u00adtion\u00adal insight into the kinet\u00adics of the con\u00adver\u00adsion of oxy\u00adgenates in water. Specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, ATR-IR spec\u00adtroscopy is used to demon\u00adstrate that Pt\/Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> read\u00adi\u00adly acti\u00advates bio\u00admass-derived oxy\u00adgenates, such as glyc\u00aderol, to form sur\u00adface bound CO on the Pt par\u00adti\u00adcles. The num\u00adber of avail\u00adable sur\u00adface sites is increased when Pt\/\u03b3-Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> is cleaned by hydro\u00adgen and oxy\u00adgen sat\u00adu\u00adrat\u00aded water. Under the guid\u00adance of Prof. Johannes A. Lercher he worked on het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for var\u00adi\u00adous process\u00ades in petro\u00adle\u00adum refin\u00ading includ\u00ading hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of aro\u00admat\u00adics in Diesel fuel, alky\u00adla\u00adtion, alka\u00adne acti\u00adva\u00adtion, and cat\u00adalyt\u00adic crack\u00ading. Addi\u00adtion\u00adal research projects includ\u00aded nov\u00adel cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sys\u00adtem, such as sup\u00adport\u00aded ion\u00adic liq\u00aduids. In 2007, he moved to the Geor\u00adgia Insti\u00adtute of Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy to work with Profs. Christo\u00adpher W. Jones and Pradeep K. Agraw\u00adal as a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow. His pri\u00adma\u00adry focus was the devel\u00adop\u00adment of cat\u00adalyt\u00adic process\u00ades for bio\u00admass depoly\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion and syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of bio\u00adfu\u00adels. He joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at the Geor\u00adgia Insti\u00adtute of Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy in 2009. His research group is devel\u00adop\u00ading cat\u00adalyt\u00adic process\u00ades for the sus\u00adtain\u00adable pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of fuels and chem\u00adi\u00adcals. Spe\u00adcif\u00adic foci are on the sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of sol\u00adid cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in aque\u00adous phase, sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry of oxy\u00adgenates in water, applied spec\u00adtroscopy, physic\u00ado\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of sol\u00adid mate\u00adri\u00adals, syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of well-defined cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, methane con\u00adver\u00adsion, pyrol\u00ady\u00adsis, and gasi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion.
