Vohs<br>\n<em>Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia<\/em><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 The high oxy\u00adgen con\u00adtent and mul\u00adti\u00adple func\u00adtion\u00adal groups in bio\u00admass-derived plat\u00adform mol\u00ade\u00adcules like glu\u00adcose pose an inter\u00adest\u00ading reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading chal\u00adlenge for the con\u00adver\u00adsion of bio\u00admass to val\u00adue-added fuels and chem\u00adi\u00adcals. The key to under\u00adstand\u00ading the reac\u00adtion path\u00adways nec\u00ades\u00adsary for these con\u00adver\u00adsions lies in elu\u00adci\u00addat\u00ading reac\u00adtion active sites on cat\u00adalyt\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly rel\u00ade\u00advant sur\u00adfaces and iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading the role of each func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty exhib\u00adit\u00aded by the feed mol\u00ade\u00adcule in the reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnism. In this study, tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture pro\u00adgrammed des\u00adorp\u00adtion (TPD) and high res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion elec\u00adtron ener\u00adgy loss (HREEL) spec\u00adtroscopy are uti\u00adlized to probe the reac\u00adtion path\u00adway of the bio\u00admass-rel\u00ade\u00advant glu\u00adcose mol\u00ade\u00adcule, as well as mod\u00adel aldos\u00ades glyc\u00ader\u00adalde\u00adhyde and gly\u00adco\u00adlalde\u00adhyde, and sim\u00adple alde\u00adhyde acetalde\u00adhyde on a Pt cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sur\u00adface. The effects of mod\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of the Pt(111) sur\u00adface with oxyphilic Zn adatoms are explored with regard to hydrodeoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion chem\u00adistry, and reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms are pro\u00adposed. With all mol\u00ade\u00adcules stud\u00adied, it was found that Zn addi\u00adtion to Pt(111) result\u00aded in an increase in the bar\u00adri\u00ader for C-H and C-C scis\u00adsion, as well as notable activ\u00adi\u00adty for deoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion at the alde\u00adhyde oxy\u00adgen as a func\u00adtion of polyal\u00adco\u00adhol con\u00adtent. These results help elu\u00adci\u00addate the role of mul\u00adti\u00adple alco\u00adhol func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties in bio\u00admass-derived oxy\u00adgenates and high\u00adlight the poten\u00adtial of using alloy effects to mod\u00adi\u00adfy cat\u00adalyt\u00adic chem\u00adistry.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/abstracts\/8\/attachment\/jess_r_mcmanus-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3958\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/awe9a91v\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Jess_R_McManus1.png\" alt=\"Jess_R_McManus\" width=\"228\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3958\"><\/a><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Dr. Jesse R. Vohs, suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly defend\u00ading his the\u00adsis \u201cReac\u00adtion Char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of Bio\u00admass-Derived Oxy\u00adgenates on Noble Met\u00adal Cat\u00ada\u00adlysts\u201d. In 2009, he received his BSE in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Tulane Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, grad\u00adu\u00adat\u00ading Sum\u00adma Cum Laude with an Hon\u00adors dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion. Dur\u00ading his stud\u00adies, Dr. McManus has received sev\u00ader\u00adal awards for his aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic accom\u00adplish\u00adments, includ\u00ading the Tulane-Richards Schol\u00adar\u00adship for Aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic Excel\u00adlence, The R.C. Reed Schol\u00adar Award for aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic achieve\u00adment and promise for the future, and the Doc\u00adtor\u00adal Franklin Schol\u00adar Award for stu\u00addents with high promise to suc\u00adceed in cre\u00adative research at the cut\u00adting edge of their dis\u00adci\u00adpline.
