Expen\u00adsive, Pt-based mate\u00adri\u00adals have been found to be the most effec\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, but explo\u00adration of alter\u00adna\u00adtives has been ham\u00adpered by sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty con\u00adstraints at the typ\u00adi\u00adcal oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions of low pH and high poten\u00adtial.  <\/p>\n<p>I will dis\u00adcuss how we stud\u00adied ele\u00admen\u00adtary mech\u00ada\u00adnism of ORR on var\u00adi\u00adous met\u00adal elec\u00adtrodes using kinet\u00adic and micro-kinet\u00adic analy\u00adsis of reac\u00adtion path\u00adways and quan\u00adtum chem\u00adi\u00adcal cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions. These stud\u00adies allowed us to iden\u00adti\u00adfy the ele\u00admen\u00adtary steps and mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar descrip\u00adtors that gov\u00adern the rate of ORR. Using these per\u00adfor\u00admance descrip\u00adtors we have been able to iden\u00adti\u00adfy fam\u00adi\u00adlies of Pt and Ag-based alloys that exhib\u00adit supe\u00adri\u00ador ORR per\u00adfor\u00admance is acid and base respec\u00adtive\u00adly. <\/p>\n<p>We have syn\u00adthe\u00adsized these alloys to demon\u00adstrate the supe\u00adri\u00ador ORR activ\u00adi\u00adty with rotat\u00ading disk elec\u00adtrode exper\u00adi\u00adments. He was a Max Planck post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow with Prof. Dr. Matthias Schef\u00adfler at the Fritz Haber Insti\u00adtute of Max Planck Soci\u00adety in Berlin (Ger\u00admany), work\u00ading on first prin\u00adci\u00adples stud\u00adies of sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry.
