Furan and male\u00adic anhy\u00addride were con\u00advert\u00aded to phthal\u00adic anhy\u00addride in two reac\u00adtion steps: Diels Alder cycload\u00addi\u00adtion fol\u00adlowed by dehy\u00addra\u00adtion. Excel\u00adlent yields for the Diels-Alder reac\u00adtion between furan and male\u00adic-anhy\u00addride were obtained at room tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture and sol\u00advent-free con\u00addi\u00adtions (SFC) yield\u00ading 96% exo-4,10-Dioxa-tricyclo[5.2.1.0]dec-8-ene-3,5-dione (oxanor\u00adbornene dicar\u00adboxylic anhy\u00addride) after 4&nbsp;hrs of reac\u00adtion. It is shown that this reac\u00adtion is resis\u00adtant to ther\u00admal run\u00adaway because its reversibil\u00adi\u00adty and exother\u00admic\u00adi\u00adty. The dehy\u00addra\u00adtion of the oxanor\u00adbornene was inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded using mixed-sul\u00adfon\u00adic car\u00adboxylic anhy\u00addrides in methane\u00adsul\u00adfon\u00adic acid (MSA). An 80% selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to phthal\u00adic anhy\u00addride (87% selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to phthal\u00adic anhy\u00addride and phthal\u00adic acid) was obtained after run\u00adning the reac\u00adtion for 2&nbsp;hrs at 298&nbsp;K to form a sta\u00adble inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate fol\u00adlowed by 4&nbsp;hrs at 353&nbsp;K to dri\u00adve the reac\u00adtion to com\u00adple\u00adtion. The struc\u00adture of the inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate was deter\u00admined. This result is much bet\u00adter than the 11% selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty obtained in neat MSA using sim\u00adi\u00adlar reac\u00adtion con\u00addi\u00adtions.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Eyas Mah\u00admoud, recip\u00adi\u00adent of the AIChE SCI Schol\u00adar award,  grad\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded sum\u00adma cum laude from from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia with a B.S.E.in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in 2011. Since then he received the NSF Grad\u00adu\u00adate Research Fel\u00adlow\u00adship (GRFP) and went on to pur\u00adsue a Ph.D. in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware, under the super\u00advi\u00adsion of Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Raul F. Lobo. His the\u00adsis work focus\u00ades on the renew\u00adable pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of aro\u00admat\u00adics from bio\u00admass-feed\u00adstocks.
