Ceria-sup\u00adport\u00aded met\u00adals also have poten\u00adtial for a large num\u00adber of oth\u00ader appli\u00adca\u00adtions, rang\u00ading from methane oxi\u00adda\u00adtion to the water-gas-shift reac\u00adtion, due to the enhanced prop\u00ader\u00adties that ceria imparts. How\u00adev\u00ader, the activ\u00adi\u00adties and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties depend strong\u00adly on the struc\u00adture of the ceria and whether or not it is mixed with a sec\u00adond oxide. Cat\u00ada\u00adlyst prop\u00ader\u00adties are also affect\u00aded by how cat\u00adalyt\u00adic met\u00adals inter\u00adact with the sup\u00adport.<\/p>\n<p>In this talk, I will first dis\u00adcuss work aimed at under\u00adstand\u00ading the role that ceria plays in oxy\u00adgen stor\u00adage and demon\u00adstrate that the ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic redox prop\u00ader\u00adties of cat\u00adalyt\u00adic forms of ceria dif\u00adfer from that of bulk ceria. I will then talk about our efforts to max\u00adi\u00admize the inter\u00adac\u00adtions between cat\u00adalyt\u00adic met\u00adals and ceria, as well as pre\u00advent sin\u00adter\u00ading of the met\u00adal par\u00adti\u00adcles, through the prepa\u00adra\u00adtion of core-shell cat\u00ada\u00adlysts deposit\u00aded onto a func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adized-alu\u00admi\u00adna sup\u00adport. Gorte joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia in 1981 after receiv\u00ading his PhD in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Min\u00adneso\u00adta. He is cur\u00adrent\u00adly the Rus\u00adsell Pearce and Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Crim\u00adi\u00adan Heuer Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, with a sec\u00adondary appoint\u00adment in Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Engi\u00adneer\u00ading. Since join\u00ading Penn, Ray has served as Chair\u00adman of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from 1995 to 2000 and was the Carl V. S. Pat\u00adter\u00adson Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from 1996 through 2001. He received the 1997 Par\u00adra\u00advano Award of the Michi\u00adgan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the 1998 Philadel\u00adphia Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club Award, the 1999 Paul Emmett Award of the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the 2001 Penn Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Dis\u00adtin\u00adguished Research Award, and the 2009 AIChE Wil\u00adhelm Award. He has served as Chair\u00adman of the Gor\u00addon Con\u00adfer\u00adence on Catal\u00ady\u00adsis (1998) and Pro\u00adgram Chair\u00adman of the 12th Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Zeo\u00adlite Con\u00adfer\u00adence (1998). He is an Asso\u00adciate Edi\u00adtor of the Jour\u00adnal of the Elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal Soci\u00adety. His present research inter\u00adests are focused on elec\u00adtrodes for sol\u00adid-oxide fuel cells and the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic prop\u00ader\u00adties of core-shell mate\u00adri\u00adals.
