This unprece\u00addent\u00aded exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00adtrol of oxide sur\u00adfaces opens great oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties to design new cat\u00ada\u00adlysts using the\u00ado\u00adry and mod\u00adel\u00ading. In this talk, I will describe a vari\u00adety of new approach\u00ades for tai\u00adlor\u00ading sur\u00adface prop\u00ader\u00adties by con\u00adtrol\u00adling oxide com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion and struc\u00adture, before focus\u00ading on two spe\u00adcif\u00adic exam\u00adples. 1. Polar oxides show struc\u00adtur\u00adal defor\u00adma\u00adtions that change the struc\u00adture and com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion of sur\u00adfaces. 2. Anneal\u00ading com\u00adplex oxides can lead to sur\u00adface recon\u00adstruc\u00adtions with com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions dif\u00adfer\u00adent from any bulk mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal. Rappe<\/p><\/div><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Andrew M. Rappe is a Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adistry and Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia. He received his A. B. in \u201cChem\u00adistry and Physics\u201d sum\u00adma cum laude from Har\u00advard Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 1986, and his Ph. D. in \u201cPhysics and Chem\u00adistry\u201d from MIT in 1992. He was an IBM Post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal Fel\u00adlow at UC Berke\u00adley before start\u00ading at Penn in 1994.\n<p>Andrew received an NSF CAREER award in 1997, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fel\u00adlow\u00adship in 1998, and a Camille Drey\u00adfus Teacher-Schol\u00adar Award in 1999. He was named a Fel\u00adlow of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Soci\u00adety in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew is one of the two found\u00ading co-direc\u00adtors of Pen\u00adner\u00adgy: the Penn Cen\u00adter for Ener\u00adgy Inno\u00adva\u00adtion. He is also one of the found\u00ading co-direc\u00adtors of the VIPER hon\u00adors pro\u00adgram at Penn, the Vage\u00adlos Inte\u00adgrat\u00aded Pro\u00adgram in Ener\u00adgy Research.<\/p>\n<p>His cur\u00adrent research inter\u00adests revolve around fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric phase tran\u00adsi\u00adtions in oxides, sur\u00adface chem\u00adistry and catal\u00ady\u00adsis of com\u00adplex oxides, and the inter\u00adplay between the two: a) He helped estab\u00adlish rela\u00adtion\u00adships between com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion and fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric phase tran\u00adsi\u00adtion tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture in bis\u00admuth-con\u00adtain\u00ading per\u00adovskites oxides, b) He pre\u00addict\u00aded that chang\u00ading chem\u00adi\u00adcal vapor com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion above a fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric oxide could reori\u00adent its polar\u00adiza\u00adtion, c) He revealed the mech\u00ada\u00adnism of domain wall motion in fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric oxides, d) He showed that chang\u00ading fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric polar\u00adiza\u00adtion dra\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly changes cat\u00adalyt\u00adic activ\u00adi\u00adty of sup\u00adport\u00aded met\u00adal films and nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles, and e) He uses com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal mate\u00adri\u00adals design to invent new fer\u00adro\u00adelec\u00adtric pho\u00adto\u00advoltaics for solar appli\u00adca\u00adtions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2013 Spring Sym\u00adpo\u00adsium &nbsp; Andrew M.
