Tita\u00adni\u00adum diox\u00adide (TiO<sub>2<\/sub>) is one of the most stud\u00adied pho\u00adto\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts, but the depen\u00addence of its activ\u00adi\u00adty on mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy and phase has not yet been sat\u00adis\u00adfac\u00adto\u00adri\u00adly inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded, due to a lack of appro\u00adpri\u00adate mod\u00adels. We report the non\u00adaque\u00adous sur\u00adfac\u00adtant-assist\u00aded syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of high\u00adly uni\u00adform TiO2 NCs with tai\u00adlorable mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy in the 1\u2013100 nm size r\u00e9gime. Meth\u00adods are described to engi\u00adneer the per\u00adcent\u00adage of {001} and {101} facets in anatase and to con\u00adtrol the mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy and phase of TiO<sub>2<\/sub> nanorods. The sur\u00adfac\u00adtants on the sur\u00adface of the NCs, which direct growth of uni\u00adform par\u00adti\u00adcles, may be removed through a sim\u00adple lig\u00adand exchange pro\u00adce\u00addure, allow\u00ading for the shape depen\u00addence of pho\u00adto\u00adcat\u00adalyt\u00adic hydro\u00adgen evo\u00adlu\u00adtion to be stud\u00adied using monodis\u00adperse TiO<sub>2<\/sub> NCs pre\u00adpared with\u00adout any high tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture anneal\u00ading. Gor\u00addon recent\u00adly earned his Ph.D in Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Chem\u00adistry from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia, under the direc\u00adtion of Prof. Christo\u00adpher B. Mur\u00adray, after defend\u00ading his the\u00adsis in Feb\u00adru\u00adary 2013, enti\u00adtled \u201cDirect\u00aded Syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and Dop\u00ading of Wide Bandgap Semi\u00adcon\u00adduct\u00ading Oxides.\u201d He received a B.S. in Chem\u00adistry with a minor in Math\u00ade\u00admat\u00adics (sum\u00adma cum laude) from Lebanon Val\u00adley Col\u00adlege. Dr. Gor\u00addon is the 2006 recip\u00adi\u00adent of the Dr. Judith Bond Endowed schol\u00adar\u00adship win\u00adner award\u00aded to out\u00adstand\u00ading chem\u00adistry major attend\u00ading a col\u00adlege or uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in south\u00adeast\u00adern Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia. His research inter\u00adests include the pre\u00adcise syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of nanocrys\u00adtalline mate\u00adri\u00adals and their appli\u00adca\u00adtions in catal\u00ady\u00adsis, pho\u00adto\u00adcatal\u00ady\u00adsis, and plas\u00admon\u00adics. In June 2013, he will begin work as a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow in the lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry of Prof. Ray\u00admond Schaak at Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty as a mem\u00adber of the Mate\u00adri\u00adals Research Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Cen\u00adter (MRSEC).
