Smith<\/strong><br>\n<em>Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading<br>\nVil\u00adlano\u00adva Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty<br>\nVil\u00adlano\u00adva, PA 19085<br>\nmichael.\u200ba.\u200bsmith@\u200bvillanova.\u200bedu<\/em><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 SBA-15 is a tem\u00adplate-syn\u00adthe\u00adsized meso\u00adporous sil\u00adi\u00adcate that has found exten\u00adsive use as a mod\u00adel sup\u00adport for stud\u00adies of sup\u00adport\u00aded catalysis.[1, 2] Thor\u00adough struc\u00adtur\u00adal analy\u00adses clear\u00adly describe the dual micro\u00adp\u00adore-meso\u00adpore struc\u00adture with a broad dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion of micro\u00adp\u00adore sizes.[3] Sil\u00adi\u00adcas such as SBA-15 have long been con\u00adsid\u00adered a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly inert sup\u00adport, quite in con\u00adtrast to oth\u00ader oxides such as tita\u00adnia or ceria. We find the effect of sur\u00adface rough\u00adness of SBA-15 has an under\u00adap\u00adpre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded effect on cat\u00ada\u00adlyst per\u00adfor\u00admance. Specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, sam\u00adples of VO<sub>x<\/sub>-SBA-15 where the sup\u00adport sur\u00adface rough\u00adness was sys\u00adtem\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly var\u00adied were chara\u00adter\u00adized using UV-Vis and Raman spec\u00adtroscopy, then test\u00aded in the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic par\u00adtial oxi\u00adda\u00adtion of methanol to formalde\u00adhyde, and propane to propene. Results show that sup\u00adports with smoother sur\u00adfaces per\u00admit the devel\u00adop\u00adment of more poly\u00admer\u00adic vana\u00addia species at the same sur\u00adface den\u00adsi\u00adty load\u00ading. Such smoother-sur\u00adface cat\u00ada\u00adlysts result in a low\u00ader selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of methanol to for\u00admade\u00adhyde, yet con\u00adverse\u00adly show a high\u00ader selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of propane to propene. This result is sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant with respect to our under\u00adstand\u00ading the role of vana\u00addi\u00adum in in par\u00adtial oxi\u00adda\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, and illus\u00adtrates the impor\u00adtance of con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading dif\u00adfer\u00adences in sup\u00adport sur\u00adface mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy in ana\u00adlyz\u00ading cat\u00adalyt\u00adic behav\u00adior.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Ref\u00ader\u00adences<\/strong><br>\n[1] V. He received his BS in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from Lafayette Col\u00adlege in 1980, then worked in a vari\u00adety of assign\u00adments with the DuPont Com\u00adpa\u00adny for 17&nbsp;years. Dr. Smith returned to school to obtain a Mas\u00adters at Vil\u00adlano\u00adva Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, and obtained his PhD in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in 2004 work\u00ading with Prof Raul Lobo. Since he has work as a research sci\u00aden\u00adtist for an SBIR start\u00adup, and has been at Vil\u00adlano\u00adva since 2006, first as a Vis\u00adit\u00ading Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor, then in a tenure track posi\u00adtion since 2008.
