A recent DFT and micro\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic mod\u00adel\u00ading study by Grabow and Mavrikakis [1] con\u00adtains a thor\u00adough review of the cur\u00adrent state of our under\u00adstand\u00ading of this reac\u00adtion. These recent mod\u00adels allow for con\u00adver\u00adsion of both CO (by direct hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion) and CO<sub>2<\/sub> (via for\u00admate inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adates) to methanol. Although trac\u00ader exper\u00adi\u00adments have shown that CO<sub>2<\/sub> is the pre\u00adferred reac\u00adtant over CO in H<sub>2<\/sub>:CO:CO<sub>2<\/sub> mix\u00adtures under com\u00admer\u00adcial con\u00addi\u00adtions, the rel\u00ada\u00adtive impor\u00adtance of these chan\u00adnels under var\u00adi\u00adous con\u00addi\u00adtions is still uncer\u00adtain [1]. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, the role of water in the reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnism has received lit\u00adtle atten\u00adtion, despite long estab\u00adlished effects of water and CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the con\u00adver\u00adsions of syn\u00adgas [2]. Our recent DFT study has point\u00aded out that water can have sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant effects in methanol syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and that a sep\u00ada\u00adrate methanol for\u00adma\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnism via a car\u00adboxyl inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate is ener\u00adget\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly pos\u00adsi\u00adble [3]. In this pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, we describe par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly strong effects of water on the con\u00adver\u00adsion of both CO and CO<sub>2<\/sub> at tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures below those of com\u00admer\u00adcial prac\u00adtice, and sup\u00adport for an inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate com\u00admon to both CO and CO<sub>2<\/sub> [4].<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Ref\u00ader\u00adences<\/strong><br>\n1. Peden<\/p><\/div><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Chuck Peden is Asso\u00adciate Direc\u00adtor of the Insti\u00adtute for Inte\u00adgrat\u00aded Catal\u00ady\u00adsis at Pacif\u00adic North\u00adwest Nation\u00adal Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry (PNNL). He is also a Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry Fel\u00adlow, and man\u00adages and par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpates in mul\u00adti\u00adple tech\u00adni\u00adcal projects with\u00adin the Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Sci\u00adences Divi\u00adsion at PNNL. He is best known as a leader in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the mech\u00ada\u00adnisms of auto\u00admo\u00adbile exhaust cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reac\u00adtions. After grad\u00adu\u00adat\u00ading with dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion from Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, Chico with a B.S. in chem\u00adistry, Peden com\u00adplet\u00aded his Ph.D. in phys\u00adi\u00adcal chem\u00adistry at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, San\u00adta Bar\u00adbara under the direc\u00adtion of Ralph G. Pear\u00adson. He then spent two years as a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal asso\u00adciate with D.
