The report is based on a work\u00adshop held in August, 2007, co-chaired by Alex\u00adis Bell of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia at Berke\u00adley, Bruce Gates of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia at Davis, and Dou\u00adglas Ray of the Pacif\u00adic North\u00adwest Nation\u00adal Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry.<\/p>\n<p>The report con\u00adclud\u00aded that, on the basis of cur\u00adrent trends, the Unit\u00aded States must seri\u00adous\u00adly reassess its ener\u00adgy future. The urgent need for fuels in an era of declin\u00ading resources and press\u00ading envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00adcerns demands a resur\u00adgence in catal\u00ady\u00adsis sci\u00adence, requir\u00ading a mas\u00adsive com\u00admit\u00adment of pro\u00adgram\u00admat\u00adic lead\u00ader\u00adship and improved exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal meth\u00adods to make it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to fol\u00adlow, in real time, cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reac\u00adtions on an atom\u00adic scale on sur\u00adfaces that are nonuni\u00adform and laden with large mol\u00ade\u00adcules under\u00adgo\u00ading com\u00adplex com\u00adpet\u00ading process\u00ades. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, a goal should be devel\u00adop\u00adment of sus\u00adtain\u00adable tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies for con\u00advert\u00ading car\u00adbon diox\u00adide and water into fuel feed\u00adstocks.
