Hydro\u00adgen is con\u00adsid\u00adered to be one of the poten\u00adtial can\u00addi\u00addates espe\u00adcial\u00adly if it can be gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded from the pho\u00adto\u00adcat\u00adalyt\u00adic con\u00adver\u00adsion of cheap abun\u00addant H<sub>2<\/sub>O into clean non-car\u00adbon H<sub>2<\/sub> from solar ener\u00adgy resources. Devel\u00adop\u00adment of this clean, renew\u00adable form of ener\u00adgy will help to address our reliance on deplet\u00aded fos\u00adsil fuel sup\u00adplies and the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal prob\u00adlems accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading its use.  <\/p>\n<p>Pho\u00adto\u00adcat\u00adalyt\u00adic split\u00adting of waters pro\u00adceeds via gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of excit\u00aded elec\u00adtrons and holes in the semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor cat\u00ada\u00adlyst bulk lat\u00adtice, the dif\u00adfu\u00adsion of the exci\u00adtons through the semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor lat\u00adtice to the sur\u00adface, and sur\u00adface reac\u00adtions of the exci\u00adtons with water to split H<sub>2<\/sub>O to H<sub>2<\/sub> and O<sub>2<\/sub>.
