Miller<\/strong><br>\n<em>Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading<br>\nCarnegie Mel\u00adlon Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty<\/em><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 Sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen from mixed gas streams is a key unit oper\u00ada\u00adtion in the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of car\u00adbon-neu\u00adtral fuels and elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from fos\u00adsil- and bio-derived feed\u00adstocks. Dense Pd mem\u00adbranes have received sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant atten\u00adtion for the sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion appli\u00adca\u00adtion in advanced gasi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion process\u00ades. Pd\u2019s near-per\u00adfect selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty reflects its unique inter\u00adac\u00adtions with H<sub>2<\/sub>: mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar H<sub>2<\/sub> dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00adates on the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Pd sur\u00adface to cre\u00adate H-atoms, which dis\u00adsolve into and dif\u00adfuse through the Pd bulk, to even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly recom\u00adbine on the down\u00adstream side of the mem\u00adbrane. In prac\u00adtice, Pd suf\u00adfers from sev\u00ader\u00adal lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions, includ\u00ading high cost, struc\u00adtur\u00adal insta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, and deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion by minor com\u00adpo\u00adnents of the mixed gas, most notably H<sub>2<\/sub>S. Alloy\u00ading with minor com\u00adpo\u00adnents, such as Cu, can be an effec\u00adtive strat\u00ade\u00adgy for improv\u00ading mem\u00adbrane per\u00adfor\u00admance.<\/p>\n<p>In col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with sci\u00aden\u00adtists at the Nation\u00adal Ener\u00adgy Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry, we have com\u00adbined mem\u00adbrane per\u00adfor\u00admance test\u00ading, com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal mod\u00adel\u00ading, and H<sub>2<\/sub> dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion activ\u00adi\u00adty char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion to pro\u00advide fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal under\u00adstand\u00ading of the inter\u00adac\u00adtions of H<sub>2<\/sub> and H<sub>2<\/sub>S with Pd and PdCu alloys.  We have shown that H<sub>2<\/sub>S influ\u00adences mem\u00adbrane per\u00adfor\u00admance by two dis\u00adtinct mech\u00ada\u00adnisms: sur\u00adface deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion, which inhibits the dis\u00adso\u00adcia\u00adtive adsorp\u00adtion of H<sub>2<\/sub>, and reac\u00adtion with the met\u00adal to form a low-per\u00adme\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty sul\u00adfide scale. The mech\u00ada\u00adnism that dom\u00adi\u00adnates depends on both alloy com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion and oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions. Sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly, the sur\u00adface of the sul\u00adfide scale is itself active for H<sub>2<\/sub> dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion. Atom\u00adistic mod\u00adel\u00ading of the dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion process pro\u00advides con\u00adtext for this obser\u00adva\u00adtion, show\u00ading that while the ener\u00adgetic bar\u00adri\u00ader for H<sub>2<\/sub> dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion is high\u00ader on Pd<sub>4<\/sub>S than on Pd, there exist reac\u00adtion tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adries with rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly low bar\u00adri\u00aders that can sus\u00adtain the sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion sequence at accept\u00adable rates. Microkinec\u00adtic analy\u00adsis of H<sub>2<\/sub>-D<sub>2<\/sub> exchange con\u00adduct\u00aded over Pd and a series of PdCu alloys, both in the pres\u00adence and absence if H<sub>2<\/sub>S, con\u00adfirms this find\u00ading and pro\u00advides insight into the role of the Cu minor com\u00adpo\u00adnent in impart\u00ading S-tol\u00ader\u00adance to the alloy.<\/p>\n<p>Final\u00adly, we have devel\u00adoped a high through\u00adput capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to explore alloy prop\u00ader\u00adties over broad, con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion space, based on Com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion Spread Alloy Film (CSAF) libraries of mod\u00adel sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtion alloys. CSAFs are thin (~100 nm) films with com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions that vary con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly across the sur\u00adface of a com\u00adpact (~1cm2) sub\u00adstrate. Using a unique mul\u00adti\u00adchan\u00adnel microre\u00adac\u00adtor for spa\u00adtial\u00adly resolved mea\u00adsure\u00adment of reac\u00adtion kinet\u00adics across CSAF sur\u00adfaces, we have char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adized the kinet\u00adics of H<sub>2<\/sub>-D<sub>2<\/sub> exchange across con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous Pd1-xCu<sub>x<\/sub> and Pd1-x-yCu<sub>x<\/sub>Au<sub>y<\/sub> com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion space.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<\/p><div id=\"attachment_3227\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/meetings\/sulfur-resistant-pd-alloy-membranes-for-h2-purification\/attachment\/james-b-miller\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3227\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3227\" src=\"http:\/\/catalysisclubphilly.org\/awe9a91v\/uploads\/2013\/03\/James-B.-Miller-211x300.png\" alt=\"James B.
