Prepa\u00adra\u00adtion of sup\u00adport\u00aded cat\u00ada\u00adlysts can involve a rich chem\u00adistry.  We will detail dif\u00adfer\u00adent prepa\u00adra\u00adtion approach\u00ades all aimed at con\u00adtrol\u00adling active site num\u00adber and site loca\u00adtion.  Issues involv\u00ading activ\u00adi\u00adty, trans\u00adport, and deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion come into play.  Site loca\u00adtions are opti\u00admized on both mm and nm scale.  Approach\u00ades involv\u00ading elec\u00adtro\u00adsta\u00adt\u00adic inter\u00adac\u00adtions and sur\u00adface com\u00adplex for\u00adma\u00adtion will be illus\u00adtrat\u00aded. We will describe approach\u00ades to mak\u00ading sup\u00adport\u00aded noble met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts on sil\u00adi\u00adca as well as cat\u00ada\u00adlysts used in Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch chem\u00adistry.  The impor\u00adtance of nanoscale homo\u00adgene\u00adity on cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty will be illus\u00adtrat\u00aded in sev\u00ader\u00adal exam\u00adples.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Stu\u00adart Soled received his Ph.D in chem\u00adistry from Brown Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 1973.  He then did 4&nbsp;year of post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal work in sol\u00adid state chem\u00adistry both at Brown Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and in France, focus\u00ading on the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis and char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of nov\u00adel oxide and sul\u00adfide mate\u00adri\u00adals.   He has been at Exxon\u2019s Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Research Labs for more than 31&nbsp;years.  His research inter\u00adests lie in the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion and eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of nov\u00adel cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals.  He has worked exten\u00adsive\u00adly on Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch chem\u00adistry, sol\u00adid acid and met\u00adal catal\u00ady\u00adsis, and hydrotreat\u00ading.   He is the coau\u00adthor of more than 70 pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions and over 100 U.S. patents.  He worked on the team dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading the Neb\u00adu\u00adla cat\u00ada\u00adlyst and has worked on a joint Exxon\u00adMo\u00adbil-Albe\u00admar\u00adle team to bring it to com\u00admer\u00adcial real\u00adi\u00adty.
