This roadmap is avail\u00adable elec\u00adtron\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.umass.edu\/biofuels\">www\u200b.ecs\u200b.umass\u200b.edu\/\u200bb\u200bi\u200bo\u200bf\u200bu\u200bels<\/a> and is the result of a 2&nbsp;day work\u00adshop spon\u00adsored by the Nation\u00adal Sci\u00adence Foun\u00adda\u00adtion and Depart\u00adment of Ener\u00adgy. This work\u00adshop brought togeth\u00ader more than 70 par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants from acadamia, indus\u00adtry and gov\u00adern\u00adment agen\u00adcies to pro\u00advide a uni\u00adfied doc\u00adu\u00adment on how cel\u00adlu\u00adlosic bio\u00adfu\u00adels can become a prac\u00adti\u00adcal real\u00adi\u00adty. The roadmap artic\u00adu\u00adlates the cen\u00adtral role of chem\u00adistry, chem\u00adi\u00adcal catal\u00ady\u00adsis, ther\u00admal pro\u00adcess\u00ading, and engi\u00adneer\u00ading in the con\u00adver\u00adsion of lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic bio\u00admass into liq\u00aduid trans\u00adporta\u00adtion fuels includ\u00ading green gaso\u00adline, green diesel and green jet fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Six thrust areas are dis\u00adcussed in the roadmap includ\u00ading:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selec\u00adtive Ther\u00admal Pro\u00adcess\u00ading of Lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic Bio\u00admass<\/li>\n<li>Uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of Petro\u00adle\u00adum Refin\u00ading Tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies for Bio\u00adfu\u00adel Pro\u00adduc\u00adtion<\/li>\n<li>Aque\u00adous-phase Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Pro\u00adcess\u00ading of Sug\u00adars and Bio-oils<\/li>\n<li>Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Con\u00adver\u00adsion of Syn-gas<\/li>\n<li>Process Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Design<\/li>\n<li>Cross Cut\u00adting 21st Cen\u00adtu\u00adry Sci\u00adence, Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, and Infra\u00adstruc\u00adture for a New Gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of Bio\u00adfu\u00adel Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This work\u00adshop builds on the suc\u00adcess of four pre\u00advi\u00adous NSF and DOE work\u00adshops. The pre\u00advi\u00adous NSF work\u00adshops include: \u201cCatal\u00ady\u00adsis for Biore\u00adnew\u00adables Con\u00adver\u00adsion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.egr.msu.edu\/apps\/nsfworkshop\/\">www\u200b.egr\u200b.msu\u200b.edu\/\u200ba\u200bp\u200bp\u200bs\u200b\/\u200bn\u200bs\u200bf\u200bw\u200bo\u200br\u200bk\u200bs\u200bhop<\/a>)\u201d and \u201cDesign of Cat\u00ada\u00adlyst Sys\u00adtems for Biore\u00adnew\u00adables (<a href=\"http:\/\/www3.cbe.iastate.edu\/nsfbioren\/\">www3\u200b.cbe\u200b.ias\u200btate\u200b.edu\/\u200bn\u200bs\u200bf\u200bb\u200bi\u200bo\u200br\u200ben\/<\/a>)\u201d.
