John\u00adson<\/strong><br>\n<em>Lucite Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal UK Ltd<\/em><br>\n<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 A brief out\u00adline of Lucite International\u2019s new \u201cAlpha\u201d methyl methacry\u00adlate tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is described includ\u00ading process scale up and the first exploita\u00adtion in Sin\u00adga\u00adpore in late 2008. The tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy was devel\u00adoped from 0.5g\/h lab scale to 500g\/h pilot and thence direct\u00adly to 12te\/h com\u00admer\u00adcial scale.  The plant was com\u00admis\u00adsioned from first intro\u00adduc\u00adtion of chem\u00adi\u00adcals to 100% rate with\u00adin 3 weeks and cur\u00adrent\u00adly oper\u00adates at over 16te\/h with excep\u00adtion\u00adal reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. <\/p>\n<p>Two cat\u00adalyt\u00adic steps are key to the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.  In the first, car\u00adbon monox\u00adide, eth\u00adyl\u00adene and methanol are react\u00aded in solu\u00adtion with a nov\u00adel pal\u00adla\u00addi\u00adum phos\u00adphine cat\u00ada\u00adlyst which gives methyl pro\u00adpi\u00adonate in 99.9+% selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty in a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous process at ppm lev\u00adel pal\u00adla\u00addi\u00adum con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtions at 100C and 10bar total pres\u00adsure.  The cat\u00ada\u00adlyst activ\u00adi\u00adty and life is very sen\u00adsi\u00adtive to oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions.  After exten\u00adsive process devel\u00adop\u00adment, activ\u00adi\u00adties of 15,000 moles\/mole Pd\/h and life of &gt;1x107moles methyl propionate\/mole Pd are rou\u00adtine\u00adly achieved on the com\u00admer\u00adcial plant.<\/p>\n<p>The sec\u00adond stage cat\u00ada\u00adlyst, com\u00adposed of caesium\/zirconia\/silica reacts methyl pro\u00adpi\u00adonate with formalde\u00adhyde at 330C and 1\u20132barg to form methyl methacry\u00adlate (MMA) and water.  The selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty is about 93% to MMA based on methyl pro\u00adpi\u00adonate and over 80% on formalde\u00adhyde fed.  The pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion describes some of the steps in devel\u00adop\u00adment of the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst includ\u00ading com\u00adpar\u00adisons with cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for sim\u00adi\u00adlar process dis\u00adclosed by com\u00adpeti\u00adtors.  A dis\u00adcus\u00adsion of the mech\u00ada\u00adnism of for\u00adma\u00adtion of MMA and byprod\u00aducts is made in terms of sur\u00adface reac\u00adtions between reac\u00adtants and prod\u00aducts.  A 2-site mod\u00adel is pro\u00adposed involv\u00ading both strong\u00adly basic and hydrox\u00adylic, weak\u00adly acidic sites. Reac\u00adtions catal\u00adysed in byprod\u00aduct for\u00adma\u00adtion include decar\u00adboxy\u00adla\u00adtions, com\u00adbined con\u00adden\u00adsa\u00adtion-decar\u00adboxy\u00adla\u00adtions, hydride trans\u00adfers and acid catal\u00ady\u00adsis. Lucite has found that com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive cat\u00ada\u00adlysts have the wrong bal\u00adance of acid\u00adi\u00adty and basic\u00adi\u00adty and result gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly in high lev\u00adels of hydride trans\u00adfer and acid catal\u00ady\u00adsis prod\u00aducts.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong>: The author has a BA (Nat\u00adur\u00adal Sci\u00adences, Chem\u00adistry) from Oxford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty a PhD in radi\u00ada\u00adtion chem\u00adistry and car\u00adried out post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal research in LEED\/XPS\/UPS before join\u00ading ICI Ltd in 1977. Since 1990 he has worked in the area of MMA process design and led the explorato\u00adry research team which defined the Alpha process and cur\u00adrent\u00adly leads Lucite\u2019s (for\u00admer\u00adly ICI Acrylics) chem\u00adistry team.
