All\u00adgeier<\/strong><br>\n<em>DuPont (for\u00admer\u00adly Amgen Inc.)<\/em><br>\n<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014  In the devel\u00adop\u00adment of phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcals, catal\u00ady\u00adsis plays a crit\u00adi\u00adcal role and its prac\u00adti\u00adtion\u00aders must nim\u00adbly assim\u00adi\u00adlate knowl\u00adedge of organ\u00adic chem\u00adistry, sur\u00adface reac\u00adtions, reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading and prod\u00aduct iso\u00adla\u00adtion.  In this pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion we explore three themes in catal\u00ady\u00adsis for the phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal indus\u00adtry: 1) Enabling New Reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, 2) Qual\u00adi\u00adty\u2026 Above All Else and 3) Speed to Deci\u00adsions\u2026 Speed to Mar\u00adket.<br>\n<br>\n<em><strong>New Reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty<\/strong>:<\/em> Asym\u00admet\u00adric hydro\u00adformy\u00adla\u00adtion of nor\u00adbornene and uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of keto\u00adlac\u00adtols as alde\u00adhyde sur\u00adro\u00adgates in reduc\u00adtive ami\u00adna\u00adtion are described as nov\u00adel chemistries demon\u00adstrat\u00aded on clin\u00adi\u00adcal man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading scale.  In the lat\u00adter case, den\u00adsi\u00adty func\u00adtion\u00adal the\u00ado\u00adry pro\u00advides insight into the mech\u00ada\u00adnism of the reac\u00adtion.<br>\nQual\u00adi\u00adty:  The use of pre\u00adcious met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlysts engen\u00adders chal\u00adlenges of remov\u00ading poten\u00adtial\u00adly tox\u00adic met\u00adals to meet qual\u00adi\u00adty spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions.  The emerg\u00ading tech\u00adnique of HPLC with ICP\/MS detec\u00adtion is a valu\u00adable tool for under\u00adstand\u00ading the diver\u00adsi\u00adty of resid\u00adual met\u00adal com\u00adplex\u00ades and iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading process options to clear met\u00adal impu\u00adri\u00adties.  In one such devel\u00adop\u00adment effort a unique dearom\u00ada\u00adti\u00adza\u00adtion reac\u00adtion was char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adized and its mech\u00ada\u00adnism elu\u00adci\u00addat\u00aded.<br>\n<br>\n<em><strong>Speed<\/strong>:<\/em>  In con\u00adduct\u00ading hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion catal\u00ady\u00adsis for phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcals cat\u00ada\u00adlyst deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion is inevitably observed at some stage of devel\u00adop\u00adment.  In one case deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly depen\u00addent upon gas to liq\u00aduid mass trans\u00adfer rates in batch reac\u00adtors.  A method for mea\u00adsur\u00ading the vol\u00adu\u00admet\u00adric mass trans\u00adfer coef\u00adfi\u00adcient (kLa) is described.  Using this infor\u00adma\u00adtion reduces risk asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with scale up from lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry to man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading equip\u00adment.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Alan All\u00adgeier grew up in the beau\u00adti\u00adful coun\u00adtry\u00adside of north\u00adwest Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia.  He earned his Ph.D. in Inor\u00adgan\u00adic Chem\u00adistry in 1997 from North\u00adwest\u00adern Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty under the direc\u00adtion of Prof. Chad Mirkin.  He com\u00adplet\u00aded post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal stud\u00adies in het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis at DuPont under Dr. Theodore Koch and con\u00adtin\u00adued at DuPont work\u00ading on hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion process\u00ades for nylon monomers and spe\u00adcial\u00adty chem\u00adi\u00adcals, as well as, homo\u00adge\u00adneous\u00adly cat\u00adalyzed olefin hydro\u00adcya\u00adna\u00adtion for spe\u00adcial\u00adty chem\u00adi\u00adcal appli\u00adca\u00adtions.  In 2004 Dr. All\u00adgeier moved to Amgen to estab\u00adlish a com\u00adpe\u00adten\u00adcy in het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous catal\u00ady\u00adsis and pres\u00adsure chem\u00adistry in sup\u00adport of drug dis\u00adcov\u00adery and devel\u00adop\u00adment.  In 2011 he returned to DuPont to lead a lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry in the Sur\u00adface and Par\u00adti\u00adcle Sci\u00adence Com\u00adpe\u00adten\u00adcy.  Through his career Dr. All\u00adgeier has been a leader in pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions includ\u00ading Arrange\u00adments Chair, Pro\u00adgram Chair, Trea\u00adsur\u00ader and Chair of the Philadel\u00adphia Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club, Board mem\u00adber of the 19th North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety Meet\u00ading, and Chair of the Organ\u00adic Reac\u00adtions Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety and its 23rd Con\u00adfer\u00adence. He is a con\u00adtribut\u00ading author \/ inven\u00adtor of six\u00adteen jour\u00adnal arti\u00adcles and four\u00adteen patents or patent appli\u00adca\u00adtions and served as Guest Edi\u00adtor for Top\u00adics in Catal\u00ady\u00adsis.
