Lawrence Berke\u00adley Nation\u00adal Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry<\/em><br>\n<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 The rate and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of reac\u00adtions cat\u00adalyzed by acids depend on the sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of ion-pairs at tran\u00adsi\u00adtion states that medi\u00adate kinet\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly-rel\u00ade\u00advant steps. Rates and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adties for alka\u00adnol dehy\u00addra\u00adtion and homolo\u00adga\u00adtion, alkene and cycloalkene iso\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion, and alkox\u00adide scis\u00adsion and hydro\u00adgen trans\u00adfer on poly\u00adox\u00adomet\u00ada\u00adlate and zeolitic acids show that sen\u00adsi\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to acid strength reflects dif\u00adfer\u00adences in the amount and dif\u00adfuse\u00adness of the charge in the rel\u00ade\u00advant pre\u00adcur\u00adsors and the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion states. The effects of sol\u00adva\u00adtion by con\u00adfine\u00adment on rates and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adties depend, in turn, on their respec\u00adtive dif\u00adfer\u00adences in size.  The known struc\u00adtures of these acids allow rig\u00ador\u00adous com\u00adpar\u00adisons between exper\u00adi\u00adment and the\u00ado\u00adry, which con\u00adfirm the mech\u00ada\u00adnis\u00adtic inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions of rate data and the rel\u00ade\u00advance of depro\u00adto\u00adna\u00adtion ener\u00adgies as the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal prox\u00adies of acid strength.  These stud\u00adies and insights sug\u00adgest a rig\u00ador\u00adous reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty-based rank\u00ading of acid strength that can be used to assess the strength of sol\u00adid acids with uncer\u00adtain or non-uni\u00adform struc\u00adtures.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Enrique Igle\u00adsia is the Theodore Ver\u00admeulen Chair in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia at Berke\u00adley and a Fac\u00adul\u00adty Senior Sci\u00aden\u00adtist in the Lawrence Berke\u00adley Nation\u00adal Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry.  He received his B.S. from Prince\u00adton Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and his Ph.D. degree from Stan\u00adford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty with Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Michel Boudart and joined the Berke\u00adley fac\u00adul\u00adty in 1993 after 12&nbsp;years in research and lead\u00ader\u00adship posi\u00adtions at the Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Research Labs of Exxon.   He has served as Edi\u00adtor-in-Chief of Jour\u00adnal of Catal\u00ady\u00adsis and is the Pres\u00adi\u00addent of the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety and the Direc\u00adtor of the Berke\u00adley Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Cen\u00adter.  He has co-authored more than 300 arti\u00adcles in the lead\u00ading jour\u00adnals in chem\u00adistry and chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading and is a co-inven\u00adtor in 38 U.S. patents.  He is a mem\u00adber of the Nation\u00adal Acad\u00ade\u00admy of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and a Fel\u00adlow of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Soci\u00adety.
