In this talk, efforts by my research group over the last few years on three dif\u00adfer\u00adent, but relat\u00aded, areas will be dis\u00adcussed. In the first part, I will describe how the ratio\u00adnal assem\u00adbly of mul\u00adti\u00adfunc\u00adtion\u00adal nanos\u00adtruc\u00adtured mate\u00adri\u00adals com\u00adposed of met\u00adal oxides, car\u00adbon nanofibers, metal\u00adlic nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles, organocat\u00ada\u00adlysts or organometal\u00adlic com\u00adplex\u00ades leads to nov\u00adel nanocat\u00ada\u00adlysts for effi\u00adcient syn\u00ader\u00adgis\u00adtic cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reac\u00adtions or for mul\u00adti-step in one-pot tan\u00addem reac\u00adtions of var\u00adi\u00adous organ\u00adic com\u00adpounds. The effects of how two or mul\u00adti\u00adple cat\u00adalyt\u00adic groups that are co-placed with\u00adin nanoscale cav\u00adi\u00adties do syn\u00ader\u00adgis\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly cat\u00adalyze reac\u00adtions will be demon\u00adstrat\u00aded. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, by plac\u00ading these cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in fixed bed reac\u00adtors, con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous reac\u00adtions to selec\u00adtive prod\u00aducts has been demon\u00adstrat\u00aded.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Ted\u00addy Ase\u00adfa was born in Ethiopia where he also com\u00adplet\u00aded his B.Sc. degree in Chem\u00adistry with dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion in 1992 from Addis Aba\u00adba Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, Ethiopia. He came to the Unit\u00aded States as a Ful\u00adbright Schol\u00adar in 1996 to do his grad\u00adu\u00adate study. After a brief stay at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware, he joined the Insti\u00adtute for Lasers, Pho\u00adton\u00adics and Bio\u00adpho\u00adton\u00adics (ILPB) at the State Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of New York at Buf\u00adfa\u00adlo to com\u00adplete his M.Sc. in Chem\u00adistry in 1998 with Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Paras N. Prasad. Ted\u00addy, then, went to Toron\u00adto, Cana\u00adda to com\u00adplete his Ph.D. at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Toron\u00adto in 2002 with Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Geof\u00adfrey A. Ozin. While at Toron\u00adto, he has co-invent\u00aded new class\u00ades of nanocom\u00adpos\u00adite mate\u00adri\u00adals called Peri\u00adod\u00adic Meso\u00adporous Organosil\u00adi\u00adcas (PMOs) that are cur\u00adrent\u00adly draw\u00ading wide range of inter\u00adest world-wide. He was then an invit\u00aded Miller Fel\u00adlow\u00adship nom\u00adi\u00adnee by Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Pei\u00addong Yang at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia at Berke\u00adley and a post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow at McGill Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty with Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor R. Bruce Lennox. Ted\u00addy then joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at Syra\u00adcuse Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in the sum\u00admer of 2005 and served as an Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adistry for four years before mov\u00ading to Rut\u00adgers as an Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor. He is cur\u00adrent\u00adly a joint Asso\u00adciate Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adistry and Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Biol\u00ado\u00adgy and the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Rut\u00adgers Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty at New Brunswick. He is also a mem\u00adber of the Rut\u00adgers Insti\u00adtute for Mate\u00adri\u00adals, Devices, and Nan\u00adotech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy (IAMDN) and the Rut\u00adgers Ener\u00adgy Insti\u00adtute (REI). In Decem\u00adber 2009, he helped putting togeth\u00ader the new\u00adly formed Rut\u00adgers Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Research Cen\u00adter (RCRC). His group at Rut\u00adgers is involved in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of syn\u00adthet\u00adic meth\u00adods to a wide array of func\u00adtion\u00adal nano\u00adma\u00adte\u00adri\u00adals and the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion of their poten\u00adtial appli\u00adca\u00adtions in catal\u00ady\u00adsis, tar\u00adget\u00aded deliv\u00adery of drugs at spe\u00adcif\u00adic cells, nanocy\u00adto\u00adtox\u00adi\u00adc\u00adi\u00adty, solar-cells, and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal reme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adtion. He is an NSF CAREER Awardee, holds NSF Cre\u00adativ\u00adi\u00adty Award, and is a recent Nation\u00adal Sci\u00adence Foun\u00adda\u00adtion Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adness Fel\u00adlow (NSF-ACIF) for 2010, and also is a recip\u00adi\u00adent of mul\u00adti\u00adple fed\u00ader\u00adal and local research grants and also serves as a pan\u00adelist for sev\u00ader\u00adal fed\u00ader\u00adal and inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal agen\u00adcies.
