Lobo<\/strong><br>\n<em>Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading<br>\nUni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware<\/em><br>\n<br>\n<strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 Upgrad\u00ading of bio\u00admass derived pyrol\u00ady\u00adsis oil is nec\u00ades\u00adsary to pro\u00adduce liq\u00aduid fuels that can seam\u00adless\u00adly be inte\u00adgrat\u00aded with the cur\u00adrent trans\u00adporta\u00adtion fuel infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and hydrodeoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion (HDO) is one of the most effec\u00adtive meth\u00adods to accom\u00adplish this task. In this talk we will describe the HDO of m-cresol (3-methylphe\u00adnol) inves\u00adti\u00adgate as a mod\u00adel reac\u00adtion for the HDO of the phe\u00adno\u00adlic frac\u00adtion of pyrol\u00ady\u00adsis oil of lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic bio\u00admass. To facil\u00adi\u00adtate selec\u00adtive removal of oxy\u00adgen with\u00adout fur\u00adther hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of unsat\u00adu\u00adrat\u00aded C-C bonds, exper\u00adi\u00adments were con\u00adduct\u00aded at low hydro\u00adgen pres\u00adsures. Kinet\u00adic stud\u00adies in a plug-flow reac\u00adtor show that toluene can be selec\u00adtive\u00adly pro\u00adduced from m-cresol over a Pt\/\u03b3-Al2O3 cat\u00ada\u00adlyst at pres\u00adsures as low as 0.5 atm H2 and 533&nbsp;K. A reac\u00adtion net\u00adwork has been devel\u00adoped based on inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion of the reac\u00adtions of m-cresol, and the observed reac\u00adtion prod\u00aducts and inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adates over Pt\/\u03b3-Al2O3 and oth\u00ader sup\u00adports. m-Cresol HDO pro\u00adceeds by a bifunc\u00adtion\u00adal mech\u00ada\u00adnism, requir\u00ading met\u00adal-cat\u00adalyzed hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of the aro\u00admat\u00adic ring fol\u00adlowed by acid-cat\u00adalyzed dehy\u00addra\u00adtion. The degree of hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion of the pool of inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adates pri\u00ador to dehy\u00addra\u00adtion large\u00adly deter\u00admines the resul\u00adtant prod\u00aduct dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion. The effect of the addi\u00adtion of a sec\u00adond met\u00adal (Ni and Co) on cat\u00ada\u00adlysts activ\u00adi\u00adty is also inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded. It is shown that selec\u00adtive pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of toluene requires the dehy\u00addra\u00adtion to occur before sat\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtion of the aro\u00admat\u00adic ring.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speak\u00ader Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Raul F. He has pub\u00adlished over one hun\u00addred ref\u00ader\u00adeed reports and he is co-inven\u00adtor in three US patents. He obtained his under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adate degree in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cos\u00adta Rica and lat\u00ader moved to Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia to pur\u00adsue grad\u00adu\u00adate stud\u00adies in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Cal\u00adtech.
