While nature\u2019s enzymes ele\u00adgant\u00adly inte\u00adgrate high\u00adly active cen\u00adters togeth\u00ader with adap\u00adtive nanoscale envi\u00adron\u00adments in order to exquis\u00adite\u00adly con\u00adtrol the cat\u00adalyt\u00adic trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of mol\u00ade\u00adcules to spe\u00adcif\u00adic prod\u00aducts, they are dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to incor\u00adpo\u00adrate into large scale indus\u00adtri\u00adal process\u00ades and lim\u00adit\u00aded in terms of their sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty.  The design of more robust het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals that can mim\u00adic enzyme behav\u00adior, how\u00adev\u00ader, has been hin\u00addered by our lim\u00adit\u00aded under\u00adstand\u00ading of how such trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions pro\u00adceed over inor\u00adgan\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals.  The tremen\u00addous advances in ab ini\u00adtio the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal meth\u00adods along with high per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adput\u00ading that have occurred over the past two decades pro\u00advide unprece\u00addent\u00aded abil\u00adi\u00adty to track these mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions and how they pro\u00adceed at spe\u00adcif\u00adic sites and with\u00adin par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar envi\u00adron\u00adments.  This infor\u00adma\u00adtion togeth\u00ader with the unique abil\u00adi\u00adties to fol\u00adlow such trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly is enabling the design of unique atom\u00adic sur\u00adface ensem\u00adbles and nanoscale reac\u00adtion envi\u00adron\u00adment that can effi\u00adcient\u00adly cat\u00adalyze spe\u00adcif\u00adic mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions. This talk presents the advances that have occurred with\u00adin catal\u00ady\u00adsis that have enabled this evo\u00adlu\u00adtion of mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar engi\u00adneer\u00ading and dis\u00adcuss its appli\u00adca\u00adtions to ener\u00adgy con\u00adver\u00adsion strate\u00adgies as well as chem\u00adi\u00adcal syn\u00adthe\u00adses. More specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, we will dis\u00adcuss the appli\u00adca\u00adtion to selec\u00adtive oxi\u00adda\u00adtion and hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion over sup\u00adport\u00aded met\u00adals for bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion as well as C-C bond for\u00adma\u00adtion reac\u00adtions.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Matt Neu\u00adrock is the Alice M. and Guy A. Wil\u00adson Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adistry at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Vir\u00adginia. He joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Vir\u00adginia in 1995 after receiv\u00ading his Ph.D. from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware and work\u00ading as a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal Fel\u00adlow at the Eind\u00adhoven Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and at the DuPont Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Cen\u00adter. He has received var\u00adi\u00adous awards for his research in com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal catal\u00ady\u00adsis and mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading includ\u00ading the 2007 R.H. Wil\u00adhelm Award in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Reac\u00adtion Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Insti\u00adtute of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneers and the 2005 Paul H. Emmett Award in Fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal Catal\u00ady\u00adsis from the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety. He has co-authored 200 papers, two patents and two books.
