As a key step in the process, the Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch syn\u00adthe\u00adsis (FTS) con\u00adverts syn\u00adgas (CO and H2) to pro\u00adduce hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons. Cobalt cat\u00ada\u00adlysts are pref\u00ader\u00aden\u00adtial\u00adly used in the low tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch syn\u00adthe\u00adsis because of their high activ\u00adi\u00adty, paraf\u00adfin selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and rel\u00ada\u00adtive resis\u00adtance to oxi\u00adda\u00adtion [1,2]. How\u00adev\u00ader, stud\u00adies have shown that dis\u00adpersed cobalt on cat\u00ada\u00adlyst sup\u00adports tends to deac\u00adti\u00advate into sta\u00adble cobalt (II) oxide or irre\u00adducible cobalt sup\u00adport mixed com\u00adpounds [3\u20135]. This decrease of active cobalt met\u00adal sites has pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly been attrib\u00aduted to oxi\u00adda\u00adtion by water. Ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic data for bulk cobalt sug\u00adgests oth\u00ader\u00adwise, as oxi\u00adda\u00adtion of cobalt at FTS oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions would not be expect\u00aded. Coulo\u00admet\u00adric titra\u00adtion was used to exam\u00adine redox char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics of cobalt sup\u00adport\u00aded on meso\u00adporous sil\u00adi\u00adca and zir\u00adco\u00adnia. Exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal data of cobalt con\u00adstrained by pore size in a meso\u00adporous sil\u00adi\u00adca sup\u00adport sug\u00adgests that oxi\u00adda\u00adtion ener\u00adget\u00adics of Co nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles are near\u00adly iden\u00adti\u00adcal to those of bulk par\u00adti\u00adcles [6]. How\u00adev\u00ader, ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic mea\u00adsure\u00adments of cobalt sup\u00adport\u00aded on zir\u00adco\u00adnia revealed that low cobalt load\u00ading sam\u00adples do appear to under\u00adgo par\u00adtial oxi\u00adda\u00adtion at FTS con\u00addi\u00adtions, unlike bulk cobalt and high\u00ader cobalt load\u00ading sam\u00adples. Fur\u00adther exper\u00adi\u00adments have sug\u00adgest\u00aded that the appar\u00adent dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion in redox prop\u00ader\u00adties is like\u00adly due to sup\u00adport inter\u00adac\u00adtions of cobalt oxide with the zir\u00adco\u00adnia rather than an inher\u00adent dif\u00adfer\u00adence in ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adics of bulk and dis\u00adpersed cobalt.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2013 Kevin Bakhmut\u00adsky com\u00adplet\u00aded his under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adate stud\u00adies at the Johns Hop\u00adkins Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, obtain\u00ading a B.S. in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in 2007. Kevin has since worked on his doc\u00adtor\u00adal research at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia and is present\u00adly in his fourth year of study as a mem\u00adber of Dr. Ray\u00admond J. Gorte\u2019s research group.
