This pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion will describe the impor\u00adtance of under\u00adstand\u00ading how cur\u00adrent and future ener\u00adgy needs and usage fit inti\u00admate\u00adly into catal\u00ady\u00adsis and chem\u00adistry. Ener\u00adgy needs and con\u00adsump\u00adtion impact economies world\u00adwide, glob\u00adal envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00adcerns, and also the chem\u00adi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry. Catal\u00ady\u00adsis plays a piv\u00adotal role in cre\u00adat\u00ading new, more effi\u00adcient routes to chem\u00adi\u00adcals and adding flex\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to our spec\u00adtrum of ener\u00adgy sources, ener\u00adgy car\u00adri\u00aders, and ener\u00adgy conversion\/production, while offer\u00ading a green\u00ader more sus\u00adtain\u00adable solu\u00adtion to future ener\u00adgy demands. Thus, catal\u00ady\u00adsis is fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal to gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading cur\u00adrent and future ener\u00adgy solu\u00adtions, and new ener\u00adgy effi\u00adcient sys\u00adtems. Catal\u00ady\u00adsis has and will con\u00adtin\u00adue to play a key role in the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly, sus\u00adtain\u00adable, and clean\u00ader sources of ener\u00adgy. The pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion will look anew at glob\u00adal ener\u00adgy sup\u00adplies and focus on the com\u00adpo\u00adnents and the increas\u00ading role of nat\u00adur\u00adal gas (rel\u00ada\u00adtive to petro\u00adle\u00adum and coal), renew\u00adables, gas purifi\u00adca\u00adtion, and how all this pro\u00advides mul\u00adti\u00adple oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for catal\u00ady\u00adsis, espe\u00adcial\u00adly with regard to envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00adcerns. What is impres\u00adsive is the past and pro\u00adject\u00aded growth of the world\u2019s demand for ener\u00adgy. Over the last 30&nbsp;years, all of the major fuel options have shown mod\u00adest growth, but these growth rates are pro\u00adject\u00aded to increase sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly over the next 20&nbsp;years. World ener\u00adgy demand is expect to expand by almost 45% between 2010 and 2030. It is clear that this demand is dri\u00adven not only by sus\u00adtained growth in the US and Europe, but by rapid growth in Chi\u00adna, India, and oth\u00ader parts of Asia. The key is that demand will remain tight and very sus\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adble to unpre\u00addictable events which can cre\u00adate hav\u00adoc in the com\u00admodi\u00adties mar\u00adkets. When cou\u00adpled with increas\u00ading pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions and people\u2019s nat\u00adur\u00adal quest to improve lifestyles, the price of oil (and ener\u00adgy) is pro\u00adject\u00aded to only go high\u00ader and high\u00ader. The demands on ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply will con\u00adtin\u00adue to push nations to retrieve dirt\u00adi\u00ader sources of oil (oil shale and tar sands) and impure nat\u00adur\u00adal gas. Those mar\u00adket forces and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal pres\u00adsures, through tougher emis\u00adsions con\u00adtrols and purifi\u00adca\u00adtion stan\u00addards, will con\u00adtin\u00adue to dri\u00adve con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00ading growth in cat\u00ada\u00adlysts as well as purifi\u00adca\u00adtion meth\u00adods and mate\u00adri\u00adals.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 John N.
