NAM27 Postponement Announcement

Download NAM27 announcement

Dear Catalysis Community,

During these very uncertain times, we remain focused on our objective to find the best way to bring our community safely together for a successful conference.  As we continue to monitor the evolving global situation, it has become clear an in-person conference in May 2021 will not be possible in the format we know to be for an effective meeting.  Working closely with our venue, we have agreed to postpone the conference one year to May 22–27, 2022

We believe this path will enable us to bring the community together once again for an in-person conference allowing for the valuable interactions and discussions we are used to. In the coming weeks, we will continue to update our website and communicate any additional relevant details.

We wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

With regards,

The Organizing Committee of the 27th North American Catalysis Society Meeting

Prof. Raul F. Lobo — 2020 CCP Award Recipient

Raul F. Lobo
Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering
at the University of Delaware

It is my honor to announce the 2020 recipient of the Catalysis Club of Philadelphia Award.  The recipient must have demonstrated significant contributions to the advancement of Catalysis. Such advancement can be scientific, technological, or in organizational leadership.  After a thorough review of the nominees for the award, it is my pleasure to announce Prof. Raul F. Lobo of the University of Delaware as the 2020 recipient of the CCP Award!

Prof. Lobo is currently the director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology and the Claire D. LeClaire Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware. He is recognized worldwide for his synthesis and application of microporous oxides and microporous catalysts to heterogeneous catalysis, particularly in the areas of acid catalysis for C-C bond forming reactions, methane activation and the mechanisms of selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia over Cu-containing zeolites. He developed structure-property relations of the nitrogen-selective adsorbent zeolite Li-X, the most widely used zeolite adsorbent for the production of dioxygen from air using pressure swing adsorption. His group identified the key site for N2 adsorption using a combination of neutron diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. More recently his group discovered a new type of adsorption site for CO2 in small-pore zeolites: they observed a strong affinity for CO2 adsorption in the middle of flat 8-ring windows due to a sharp electric field gradient interacting with the quadrupole of CO2, that is selective to CO2 over water because molecules with permanent dipoles are attracted to strong electric fields but not field gradients. Raul’s group also identified Cu-containing zeolites that have promising adsorption properties due to temperature-dependent motion of Cu(I) ions in and out of zeolite cavities. His catalysis contributions entail several advances in hydrocarbon activation, NOx reduction, and biomass upgrading.

Please join me in congratulating Prof. Lobo on adding another accolade onto a storied career.

Koch (1925–2014) was a chemist who worked at DuPont, and spent his entire career developing chemical processes and bringing them from the benchtop to commercialization with marked creativity and tenacity. The award will provide financial support to a graduate student up to the amount of $1000 to attend a conference of his or her choice. The amount can be used to cover registration fees and/or travel expenses.

Eligibility: Graduate students that are members of the CCP and have paid the annual dues ($10).  Selection will be based on potential impact of the travel award to the student’s career goals, financial need and overall merit. (The completed application form should not exceed three pages.)

The application form is due February 14th 2020, and the winner will be announced at our February 27th meeting.
