In com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion with HT meth\u00adods, we also employ a vari\u00adety of more tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic meth\u00adods to under\u00adstand the under\u00adly\u00ading fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal sci\u00adence.<\/p>\n<p>Two exam\u00adples will be used to illus\u00adtrate this research approach: de-NOx for auto\u00admo\u00adtive exhaust after-treat\u00adment and ammo\u00adnia decom\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for CO free hydro\u00adgen generation.While HT screen\u00ading is a macro\u00adscop\u00adic analy\u00adsis tech\u00adnique, we are also inter\u00adest\u00aded in observ\u00ading non-lin\u00adear phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna on work\u00ading cat\u00ada\u00adlysts in situ on the microscale using spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic imag\u00ading based on ellip\u00adsom\u00ade\u00adtry. The col\u00adlec\u00adtive, glob\u00adal behav\u00adiour of a cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sys\u00adtem depends on the effec\u00adtive com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion of local reac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty vari\u00ada\u00adtions to dis\u00adtant points in the sys\u00adtem. One mode of com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion occurs via par\u00adtial pres\u00adsure fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in the gas-phase above the cat\u00adalyt\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly active sur\u00adface. This gas-phase cou\u00adpling mode is con\u00adsid\u00adered to be most effec\u00adtive under vac\u00adu\u00adum con\u00addi\u00adtions, where the mean free path between mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar col\u00adli\u00adsions is large. We take advan\u00adtage of a spa\u00adtial\u00adly dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted sys\u00adtem of iso\u00adlat\u00aded chem\u00adi\u00adcal oscil\u00adla\u00adtors to inves\u00adti\u00adgate the details of gas-phase com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion in the 10\u20133 Torr range. Char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of local gas-phase vari\u00ada\u00adtions, in con\u00adjunc\u00adtion with local kinet\u00adic activ\u00adi\u00adty on the sur\u00adface, shows that sur\u00adface\/\u00adgas-phase inter\u00adac\u00adtion might dif\u00adfer from the con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal assump\u00adtion of a gra\u00addi\u00adent free, mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar flow envi\u00adron\u00adment near the sur\u00adface. This analy\u00adsis pro\u00advides a quan\u00adti\u00adta\u00adtive esti\u00admate of the effec\u00adtive gas-phase cou\u00adpling length in a het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous sys\u00adtem. This cou\u00adpling length was found to be in agree\u00adment with sur\u00adface imag\u00ading results which qual\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtive\u00adly showed cou\u00adpling between oscil\u00adla\u00adtors.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Jochen Lauter\u00adbach received his Diplo\u00adma in Physics at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Bayreuth, Ger\u00admany under Prof. J. K\u00fcp\u00adpers and his Doc\u00adtor\u00adate in Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Chem\u00adistry at the Fritz-Haber Insti\u00adtute of the Max-Planck-Soci\u00adety, Berlin, Ger\u00admany under Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor G. Ertl. He came to the US in 1994 with a Feodor-Lynen-Fel\u00adlow\u00adship of the Alexan\u00adder von Hum\u00adboldt-Foun\u00adda\u00adtion and per\u00adformed his post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal work at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia at San\u00adta Bar\u00adbara under Prof. W.H. Wein\u00adberg. He joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at Pur\u00addue in 1996 and, in 2002, moved to the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware, where he cur\u00adrent\u00adly is a Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor in the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Depart\u00adment. His research inter\u00adests include the design of cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals using high-through\u00adput screen\u00ading method\u00adolo\u00adgies and in situ spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic tech\u00adniques, devel\u00adop\u00adment of cat\u00ada\u00adlyst syn\u00adthe\u00adsis method\u00adolo\u00adgies based on microemul\u00adsions, nano-engi\u00adneered poly\u00admer films from renew\u00adable feed\u00adstock, and non-lin\u00adear dynam\u00adics of chem\u00adi\u00adcal reac\u00adtions, in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar exter\u00adnal spa\u00adtiotem\u00adpo\u00adral forc\u00ading.
