The \u201cradius of cur\u00adva\u00adture\u201d effect implies a change in the sol\u00adid sur\u00adface ten\u00adsion of the pore wall as the pore diam\u00ade\u00adter (cur\u00adva\u00adture) is changed that is expect\u00aded to change the activity\/selectivity of an iso\u00adlat\u00aded cat\u00adalyt\u00adic site on the pore wall of the sup\u00adport. An iso\u00adlat\u00aded site can be formed by iso\u00admor\u00adphous sub\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion (dur\u00ading syn\u00adthe\u00adsis) of some Si cations by V cations in the MCM-41 sil\u00adi\u00adca matrix. Sev\u00ader\u00adal labs have report\u00aded that iso\u00adlat\u00aded V sites on a sil\u00adi\u00adca sup\u00adport are prefer\u00adable to dimers, oligomers or poly\u00admers of van\u00addia on a sil\u00adi\u00adca sup\u00adport for the oxi\u00adda\u00adtion of methanol to formalde\u00adhyde. MCM-41 might have an advan\u00adtage rel\u00ada\u00adtive to oth\u00ader sil\u00adi\u00adcas because of its very high sur\u00adface area, &gt;1000&nbsp;m<sup>2<\/sup>\/g. Both the air oxi\u00adda\u00adtion of methanol and methane to formalde\u00adhyde have been used as probe reac\u00adtions for cat\u00adalyt\u00adic char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of V-MCM-41. SBA-15 has a sim\u00adi\u00adlar struc\u00adture to MCM-41, but larg\u00ader pores and thick\u00ader walls. Iso\u00admor\u00adphous  sub\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion of V dur\u00ading syn\u00adthe\u00adsis is not prac\u00adti\u00adcal, but well dis\u00adpersed V can be pre\u00adpared post-syn\u00adthe\u00adsis by graft\u00ading (reac\u00adtion with sur\u00adface hydrox\u00adyls). The activ\u00adi\u00adty for methanol oxi\u00adda\u00adtion on V-MCM-41 and V-SBA-15 will be com\u00adpared and dis\u00adcussed.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Gary L. Haller is the Hen\u00adry Pren\u00adtiss Bec\u00adton Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Applied Sci\u00adence at Yale Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty with joint appoint\u00adments in the Depart\u00adments of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Chem\u00adistry. Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Haller received a B.S. in math\u00ade\u00admat\u00adics and chem\u00adistry from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Nebras\u00adka at Kear\u00adney in 1962 and a Ph.D. in phys\u00adi\u00adcal chem\u00adistry from North\u00adwest\u00adern Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 1966. Fol\u00adlow\u00ading a NATO Post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal Fel\u00adlow\u00adship at Oxford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, he joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty of Yale where he has held a vari\u00adety of admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive posts that include Chair of the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, Chair of the Coun\u00adcil of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, and Deputy Provost for Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Sci\u00adences and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading. He was Mas\u00adter of Jonathan Edwards Col\u00adlege, one of twelve res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial col\u00adleges that com\u00adprise Yale Col\u00adlege 1997\u20132008.<\/p>\n<p>Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Haller\u2019s research involved the mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar under\u00adstand\u00ading of het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. His research com\u00adbines the inor\u00adgan\u00adic chem\u00adistry of cat\u00ada\u00adlyst syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, phys\u00adi\u00adcal chem\u00adistry of spec\u00adtro\u00adscop\u00adic char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion of het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, and the kinet\u00adics and mech\u00ada\u00adnism of sim\u00adple organ\u00adic reac\u00adtions.
