The effi\u00adcient and selec\u00adtive down\u00adstream pro\u00adcess\u00ading of cel\u00adlu\u00adlose deriv\u00ada\u00adtives (<em>e.g.<\/em>, hex\u00adose, fruc\u00adtose, glu\u00adcose, etc.) exists as a for\u00admi\u00adda\u00adble pro\u00adcess\u00ading bot\u00adtle\u00adneck. Owing to prop\u00ader\u00adties such as breadth of oper\u00adat\u00ading con\u00addi\u00adtions, des\u00adignable chem\u00adi\u00adcal selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, and recy\u00adcla\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, het\u00adero\u00adge\u00adneous cat\u00adalyt\u00adic routes serve as an attrac\u00adtive means, in lieu of bio\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, ther\u00admo\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal, and homo\u00adge\u00adneous ones, for effi\u00adcient hydrother\u00admal pro\u00adcess\u00ading of sug\u00adary cel\u00adlu\u00adlose deriv\u00ada\u00adtives. Yet, hydrother\u00admal insta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of cur\u00adrent cat\u00adalyt\u00adic sup\u00adports opens excit\u00ading oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for the devel\u00adop\u00adment of next-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlysts capa\u00adble of meet\u00ading selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, effi\u00adcien\u00adcy, and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty needs of the future biore\u00adfin\u00adery.<\/p>\n<p>This talk will high\u00adlight efforts to real\u00adize hydrother\u00admal\u00adly sta\u00adble inor\u00adgan\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals bear\u00ading mul\u00adti\u00adscale, three-dimen\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly ordered pore topol\u00ado\u00adgy and tun\u00adable sur\u00adface func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty. Specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, it will focus on a hier\u00adar\u00adchi\u00adcal nan\u00adotem\u00adplat\u00ading approach in which pre-formed inor\u00adgan\u00adic nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles are assem\u00adbled into ordered col\u00adloidal crys\u00adtal struc\u00adtures and employed as hard, sac\u00adri\u00adfi\u00adcial tem\u00adplates for both direct and indi\u00adrect repli\u00adca for\u00adma\u00adtion of var\u00adi\u00adous hydrother\u00admal\u00adly sta\u00adble porous mate\u00adri\u00adals (<em>e.g.<\/em>, car\u00adbon, tita\u00adnia, zeo\u00adlite). The work is pred\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded upon the hypoth\u00ade\u00adsis that hard inor\u00adgan\u00adic tem\u00adplates help resist pore col\u00adlapse dur\u00ading struc\u00adtur\u00adal coars\u00aden\u00ading or con\u00adfined growth of inor\u00adgan\u00adic repli\u00adca mate\u00adri\u00adals, and that decou\u00adpling tem\u00adplate for\u00adma\u00adtion and repli\u00adca\u00adtion allows for pre\u00adcise and ver\u00adsa\u00adtile engi\u00adneer\u00ading of the tem\u00adplate, and thus the repli\u00adca pore topol\u00ado\u00adgy.<\/p>\n<p>This talk will focus on var\u00adi\u00adous stages of hier\u00adar\u00adchi\u00adcal mate\u00adri\u00adals assem\u00adbly, begin\u00adning with tech\u00adniques for con\u00adtrolled syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of pri\u00adma\u00adry inor\u00adgan\u00adic nanopar\u00adti\u00adcle build\u00ading units with nanome\u00adter res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion, and encom\u00adpass\u00ading descrip\u00adtions of their assem\u00adbly into ordered porous struc\u00adtures, tem\u00adplat\u00ading of high\u00ader-order porous mate\u00adri\u00adals, and real\u00adiza\u00adtion of mul\u00adti\u00adscale (<em>e.g.<\/em>, micro-\/me\u00adso\u00adporous) porous sub\u00adstrates. Exam\u00adples of mate\u00adri\u00adals that will be dis\u00adcussed include mono- and mul\u00adti-lay\u00ader col\u00adloidal crys\u00adtal films, three-dimen\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly ordered meso\u00adporous (3DOm) car\u00adbon and tita\u00adnia repli\u00adca par\u00adti\u00adcles and thin films, size-tun\u00adable, uni\u00adform\u00adly shaped zeolitic (i.e., sil\u00adi\u00adcalilte-1) nanocrys\u00adtals, and 3DOm-imprint\u00aded sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal zeo\u00adlite par\u00adti\u00adcles. The result\u00ading tun\u00adable porous mate\u00adri\u00adals hold excit\u00ading impli\u00adca\u00adtions for appli\u00adca\u00adtions rang\u00ading from catal\u00ady\u00adsis to mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtions, and simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous reac\u00adtion-sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtions tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Mark A. Sny\u00adder obtained his B.S in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading with high\u00adest hon\u00adors from Lehigh Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 2000, and his Ph.D. in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in 2006. His doc\u00adtor\u00adal research on mul\u00adti\u00adscale mod\u00adel\u00ading of mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar trans\u00adport in poly\u00adcrys\u00adtalline zeo\u00adlite mem\u00adbranes was rec\u00adog\u00adnized with an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Insti\u00adtute of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneers (AIChE) Grad\u00adu\u00adate Research Award in 2005. Dur\u00ading his doc\u00adtor\u00adal work, he was also award\u00aded the T.W. Fras\u00ader and Shirley Rus\u00adsell Teach\u00ading Fel\u00adlow\u00adship (2004), the Robert L. Pig\u00adford Teach\u00ading Assis\u00adtant Award (2003), and the Robert L. Pig\u00adford Grad\u00adu\u00adate Fel\u00adlow\u00adship (2000). Sny\u00adder car\u00adried out post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal research in the Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Min\u00adneso\u00adta from 2006\u20132008, inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the benign syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of met\u00adal oxide nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles and their assem\u00adbly into mono- to mul\u00adti-lay\u00ader porous thin films, perms\u00ade\u00adlec\u00adtive encap\u00adsu\u00adla\u00adtion of liv\u00ading cells towards nov\u00adel ther\u00ada\u00adpeu\u00adtics, and for\u00adma\u00adtion of repli\u00adca porous struc\u00adtures. Sny\u00adder joined Lehigh University\u2019s Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in August 2008 as an Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor, and was award\u00aded a P.C. Rossin Assis\u00adtant Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor\u00adship in June 2009, a posi\u00adtion that he will hold through 2011.
