SOFC can there\u00adfore oper\u00adate on a wide range of fuels, includ\u00ading methane and oth\u00ader hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons. Like\u00adwise, elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis of CO<sub>2<\/sub> is fea\u00adsi\u00adble in an SOE. How\u00adev\u00ader, to allow sta\u00adble oper\u00ada\u00adtion with a wider range of feeds to the elec\u00adtrodes, new elec\u00adtrode mate\u00adri\u00adals must be devel\u00adoped. This talk will describe the meth\u00adods being devel\u00adoped at Penn that allow the elec\u00adtrode com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion and struc\u00adture to be var\u00adied eas\u00adi\u00adly. Results for both fuel- and air-side elec\u00adtrodes will be dis\u00adcussed.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Speaker\u2019s Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Dr. Ray\u00admond J. Gorte joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Penn\u00adsyl\u00adva\u00adnia in 1981 after receiv\u00ading his PhD in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Min\u00adneso\u00adta. He is cur\u00adrent\u00adly the Rus\u00adsell Pearce and Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Crim\u00adi\u00adan Heuer Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, with a sec\u00adondary appoint\u00adment in Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Engi\u00adneer\u00ading. Since join\u00ading Penn, Dr. Gorte has served as Chair\u00adman of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from 1995 to 2000 and was the Carl V. S. Pat\u00adter\u00adson Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading from 1996 through 2001. He received the 1997 Par\u00adra\u00advano Award of the Michi\u00adgan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the 1998 Philadel\u00adphia Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club Award, the 1999 Paul Emmett Award of the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the 2001 Penn Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Dis\u00adtin\u00adguished Research Award, and the 2009 AIChE Wil\u00adhelm Award. He has served as Chair\u00adman of the Gor\u00addon Con\u00adfer\u00adence on Catal\u00ady\u00adsis (1998) and Pro\u00adgram Chair\u00adman of the 12th Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Zeo\u00adlite Con\u00adfer\u00adence (1998). His present research inter\u00adests are focused on elec\u00adtrodes for sol\u00adid-oxide fuel cells and on ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adic stud\u00adies of redox prop\u00ader\u00adties with oxi\u00adda\u00adtion cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.
