How\u00adev\u00ader, it is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to know a pri\u00adori how the chem\u00adi\u00adcal prop\u00ader\u00adties of par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar car\u00adbide and bimetal\u00adlic sys\u00adtems will be mod\u00adi\u00adfied rel\u00ada\u00adtive to the par\u00adent met\u00adals. In the past few years our research group has inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded the nov\u00adel cat\u00adalyt\u00adic prop\u00ader\u00adties of var\u00adi\u00adous car\u00adbide and bimetal\u00adlic sys\u00adtems, using a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of Den\u00adsi\u00adty Func\u00adtion\u00adal The\u00ado\u00adry (DFT) cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions, sur\u00adface sci\u00adence stud\u00adies on sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces, and reac\u00adtor and fuel cell stud\u00adies of sup\u00adport\u00aded cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. The gen\u00ader\u00adal trends from the exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal stud\u00adies of car\u00adbide [1] and bimetal\u00adlic sur\u00adfaces [4] have been sum\u00adma\u00adrized in recent reviews.<\/p>\n<p>In this talk we will describe the uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of tung\u00adsten car\u00adbides as poten\u00adtial anode elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC). Cur\u00adrent\u00adly, the anode elec\u00adtro\u00adcat\u00ada\u00adlysts for DMFC are Pt and Pt\/Ru, which are dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adta\u00adgeous in terms of the pro\u00adhib\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly high costs and their sus\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to be poi\u00adsoned by CO. We will describe how to con\u00adtrol the decom\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion path\u00adways of methanol on sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces of tung\u00adsten car\u00adbides under well-con\u00adtrolled ultra\u00adhigh vac\u00adu\u00adum (UHV) con\u00addi\u00adtions. We will also dis\u00adcuss the syn\u00adthe\u00adsis of phase pure tung\u00adsten car\u00adbide elec\u00adtrodes using Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Vapor Depo\u00adsi\u00adtion (PVD) to bridge the \u201cmate\u00adri\u00adals gap\u201d between sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces and poly\u00adcrys\u00adtalline films. We will then present our results of the elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of the tung\u00adsten car\u00adbide elec\u00adtrodes to bridge the \u201cpres\u00adsure gap\u201d between UHV envi\u00adron\u00adment and elec\u00adtro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00addi\u00adtions.
